Servers and Headers

Postby magician1962 » Tue Feb 21, 2012 6:17 am

This is first a question but may also be a feature request.

I occasionally I use giganews for a few months to catch up or find items I missed, but then drop back to my ISP's free service

I have just done such a change, and the problem I have is it wants to download all headers since I last used the service. And as they don't seem to use compression.....It takes ages

The thing is, I know they only hold binaries for about 2 weeks so set typical retention to 14 days in the server options.

Is there a way of setting, or a feature request to allow the header download to be limited to the same figure, or something similar, or from point of activation. As i see no point it getting lists of posts they don't actually hold, then have to go through deleting them.

Currently I have been maxing out my bandwidth 50mb for over 2 hours, and expect a similar time to completion. If limitations were possible , it would be 5 minutes to be upto date

In RC1, you could set the "Download age" to N days. N being how many days worth you want to download then right click the group "Post Storage/Use Download Age" to reset the group to use "Download Age".

Many thanks, took a couple of attempts to get it to work. Must remember to delete the old header download or it just keeps trying again :)
