I seem to recall it being said that after 6.80 was released, the focus would shift to addressing the problem with NB not being able to process the new obfuscation schemes for the internet search.

It's pretty much already been addressed. You'll find many though not all of the obscured file sets already in the search engine.

I'm not going to go into all that much detail about the process so they don't fuck up usenet some other way.

If you aren't able to find stuff that you think is getting posted, pm me some examples and I can look into it further. You will still see obfuscated posts in search results but there may also be a decoded one available under a different entry. Performing a search for something specific will work best.
