Reported Size and Actual Size Don't Match

Lately I've been getting a larger than usual number of broken downloads. The error I see most often is:

Code: Select all
ERROR YEnc Reported and Actual Size don't match

Any insight into what could cause that, and, if so, is there anything I can do to fix the issue?

I'm using Newsbin Pro v.6.71 Build 4766

What security software are you using? That line is pretty much telling you something is probably corrupting the download.

Nothing, really. Active antivirus causes more problems than it solves in my experience.

I'd probably upgrade to the latest version just so we're on the same page.

The question to be answered is whether this is a server problem or a local problem. Normally, I'd say this looks like something is intercepting and damaging the traffic from the news server but if you're only running the MS supplied security software, I've never seen it cause problems.

Are you using SSL? If not I'd try it. If you are, I might experiment with running without it.

I am using SSL, and this happens using more than one usenet server. (I've checked by explicitly disabling my primary.) I'll try the latest version and report back.

Upgraded to v6.72 Build 6776, same thing happening.

Disabling SSL didn't help either.

This suggests the problem is the server. What server it it?

I'm having the problem on both Easynews and Astraweb.

Are you sure there is no other security software running on your machine? For example malewarebytes? Nobody else is reporting issues on these two servers so I have to think it is a local problem. Is there anything you can think of that might be between you and these servers? For example are you doing this at work through a company firewall? Or over wifi?

There is no security software other than what's built into Windows Server 2012. I'm inclined to believe it's a local problem as well, given that it happens with two completely disparate servers. The thing is, I don't have any idea what the problem could be. This has only started in the last few weeks, and nothing has changed as far as my setup goes. I'm at home, my server connected to the router via ethernet.

I should also add that this doesn't happen to every download (though I'd say more than half), but for the downloads that are affected, it happens consistently. Even if I restart everything and retry a download a day or two later, the same thing happens. Is the size mismatch thing a clear indicator of a corrupted download? Could the problem be malformed posts?

It could be the files are posted wrong too.

"Size Mismatch" happens when a chunk of the file says "I'm 650K" but the actual amounted downloaded is not 650K. So, it could be a posting problem, it could be the server, or it could be a problem when the data is transported.

If you want to PM me the subject of one of these downloads I could try it here. Don't post it here out in public.

If it's a problem with the posts themselves, then I assume there's nothing to be done. I'll just have to hope someone resolves the problem upstream.
