On the latest version the "speed progress" indicator shows '0' but the files seem to be downloading although the logging shows parts missing, how is this so?

i'm not really clear what you mean. The second section from the left in the status bar (at the bottom) shows the current speed.

If you've restarted it's possible it's reading saved chunks of the file that are stored on disk during download.
