Dual version install; How Do I point to the data directory?

Postby ppan » Thu Jun 23, 2016 8:40 pm

I am sorry for asking, as this has probably been covered before (although I cannot find the info);

I would like to install 2 different versions of Newsbin (6.41 & the current version) using two different data directories.

I currently have Newsbin installed in:
C:\mypath1\Newsbin
and all the data (with the nbi file) at
D:\mypath1\Newsbin_Data

If I understand correctly, I can copy my current install (v6.41) and data directory to:
C:\mypath2\Newsbin
D:\mypath2\Newsbin_Data

When I upgrade Newsbin, the installation (and data) will be upgraded using old paths (Mypath1).

How do I run the old copied install (v6.41) using the old copied data (at Mypath2)? In other words, how do I tell the old Newsbin where my old data is located?

You need two different NBI's and you need each NBI to point to different data folders. The data folder is a configuration item in each NBI file. Then you need two shortcuts one for each version. In each shortcut you will pass a different NBI file in the command line.

Then depending on what shortcut you use to run Newsbin each one picks a version and NBI file. The actual install folder and actual data folder don't matter as long as the shortcut is pointing to the correct EXE and the data folder is set properly inside the NBI file. There's no need for the EXE and the Data folder to be in the same path or even in the same drive.

For instance I'm installed to the C: drive, my data folder is on my W: drive and I download to my X: drive.

You can run them both at the same time but keep in mind that that might bump you into your news server's connection limits.

1. A shortcut like this: installpath\Newsbinpro64.exe my.nbi ?

2.I looked in my.nbi and found
DataPath=D:\@P_Data\NB6_DATA\
This is correct. I also have the spool files there.

However, I also found an incorrect entry:
SpoolPath=E:\@P_Data\NB5_DATA\

That directory doesn't exist (anymore). Is that an old entry from v5 that is no longer used?
Do I need to be concerned? Should I delete the entry?

1 - SpoolPath isn't used anymore.

2 - Shortcut as in a shortcut you make inside windows. Not sure how to describe it. I'd probably google for the method.
