Sort on Download Path broken

Postby jginnane » Tue Sep 08, 2015 9:49 am

[ Version 6.60 build 4163, Win 10 Pro 64-bit, 32GB RAM ]

This seems (possibly) to be related to the thread "NZB files going to wrong folder".

At any rate, mine's easier. Used to be able to sort a file list on "Download Path" column, and as of the recent update(s), it doesn't work. (It should sort on full path. Can't tell what criteria it's using now -- invisible hash tags?)

For that matter, a simple sort on Download Descriptions also is wrong -- seems to be alpha-reversed.

I don't think this (i.e., Sorting File List) is worthy of a release by itself, but please check for the next bug fix. :)

(Note -- exclusively using NZBs now, but this shouldn't matter once the list is loaded.)

Thanks,

jginnane

I have one report of this so far and many people using NZB's so, I'm not sure where to go with it. You should see full path in the download list. If you're trying to use "$(GROUP)" and the NZB isn't a compacted set, I could see the files ending up in different folders if the files were crossposted. Still, it would show up that way in the download list.

Main Download Folder: D:\$(DAYS)\$(GROUP)\$(FILENAME)\

Download folder for Downloads from NZB Files: D:\$(DAYS)n\$(NZBFILE)\

Unfortunately, just about everything has to be from NZB files nowadays. :( But the column "Download Path" used to be sort-able. It isn't any more.

FWiW, I have pasted my nbi below. (It's pretty simple.) I have only edited out personal stuff related to my Usenet provider so this can appear in an open forum.

Re: Sort on Download Path broken

Postby Quade » Wed Sep 09, 2015 7:31 am

There's two issues being discussed here.

1 - One person mentioned random download paths for NZB's.

2 - General issue with column sorting on download path.

I was looking at #2 this morning and confirmed it. I'm pretty sure I know what the problem is. A theory I mentioned in another post.

Main Download Folder: D:\$(DAYS)\$(GROUP)\$(FILENAME)\

Download folder for Downloads from NZB Files: D:\$(DAYS)n\$(NZBFILE)\

The first path looks problematic to me. How about changing the first path to "D:\DL\$(NZBFILE)\" as an experiment and see how it acts. By default Newsbin will move files mentioned in a PAR file into a common folder in order to repair them but if the files don't need repair it probably doesn't. Changing the download path will only change new files added to the download list. Existing files already have a download path. If that works then maybe try "D:\$(DAYS)\$(NZBFILE)\". I'm not clear if "DAYS" can split files among paths but I know "$(FILENAME)" can.

It was me who reported #1

This problem disappears with the new NZBs. You have to wait to finish the existing DL list, than you have to delete DownloadsV2.db3 Downloaded.db3. When you add new NZBs, the default paths you entered in the options will be OK

That makes sense.

There was a change in when the paths were rendered. In 6.56 they'e rendered when the file is added to the download list. In 6.60 it happens when the file is assembled. The reason for the change is to allow people to assign new paths with the $(XXX) macros and have them render correctly when the download happens.

Hi Quade,

The Main download folder is a default for newsgroups, right? If so, I very seldom get anything there any more -- just some <stuff>, and a few random vintage xvids. I think your suggestion on changing NZBFILE to FILENAME has good possibilities, so I'll report back in 24 hours.

Like I said, it's not a problem worthy of a bug release by itself, but it used to work OK. :) I wish you could introduce other language terms, like going into the finished product and being able to separate them based on AVI, VOB, mkv, etc etc. But this is from a guy who used to paste together text files with UUencode, so it's been all upside for a while. :)

OK, here's the update: No difference as far as sorting. As far as overall appearance goes, FILENAME becomes the subdirectory name, so if the NZB was cleaned up before you put it in the place where Newsbin collects NZBs from, you'll have that cleaned name instead of the NZBFILE data which often contains a lot of extraneous stuff.

IOW, I'll keep FILENAME (and remember to clean up the NZB before putting it where Newsbin will grab it.)

Still no clues on what kind of sort I'm getting when I try to sort on Download Path. It looks, from a short sample I'm using right now, that it's almost a reverse-chrono sort, like clicking twice on the Date column. By logic then, if I click on Date should I get the Download Path sort? Nope, that doesn't work either.

Yeah, this suggestion was totally unrelated to the sorting thing. Nothing can fix the sorting except code changes. I was addressing the issue with where the files landed. If you're happy with $(FILENAME) then that's fine. I think it's going to cause you problems though.

About file landing: since moving to mostly NZBs, I've gotten into semi-batch post processing .. wait until it's time to add more to the download list, or (practically) a couple times a day. So, whatever is in the individual downloaded file directories is reviewed and moved:

1. "Easy" completed AVIs, MKVs, and images are sent to Computer 2 for conversion and burning (VSO ConvertXtoDVD and/or ImgBurn).

2. High quality files (taking DVD9s) and DVD-structured (VOB) sets go to Computer 3 for essentially the same thing. Computer 3 also deals with BluRays.

3. One-offs or occasional higher-priority d/ls may be kept on Computer 1 for similar processing (while NewsBin continues to run).

4. Problems -- incomplete downloads, or Net spooge with passwords, etc. -- are dealt with -- usually by deletion. Once in a while I can find the extra PARs to resolve something by searching the original file with Binsearch.info

Nothing stays on the original download computer in its original format or file landing directory more than 24 hours.

The reason to have a couple extra PCs linked is simply to deal with the amount of processing time necessary to convert what's received to burnable format at the highest possible quality. Quite often for the same "movie" I'll get an early Xvid, then a DVD5, then a DVD9 or BluRay, so optimally the DVD9 will appear while the lower quality files are still sitting in the burn queue on Computer 2 (and can be removed).

So: the filename sorting in Newsbin is a minor convenience (that sadly went away recently). Like I said, it's not worth a lot of effort to deal with, in my case, since I really only need to see what's still in the download queue when I'm adding NZBs and want to avoid near-dupes.

It's already a solved problem. It'll be in the next beta.

Just wanted to stop back and say that 6.61RC3 worked like a charm in this regard. Thanks again!
