How can I completely disable Thumbnail generation?

Every time I extract a file containing lots of images, NB grinds to a painful, crashing halt... I tried displaying the Thumbnail tab, un-hiding it, and then closing it but it doesn't close.

Scratch that, I can close it, but it doesn't disable it, it's still hanging/crashing NB after extracting these archives
