Older headers disappearing

Postby thwartme » Fri Jan 02, 2015 3:25 am

Hello,

This is the second time this has happened to me. Using V6.55 build 3334.

I have downloaded ALL headers from a group, and seen posts as old as 2009. But the next time I go to look in that group - and do show all headers - only the last couple of months are there. I check other groups I've got in my groups list, and they seem to be fine, but one particular group has lost basically all of its history. WARNING: Adult content. The first time it happened was with a.b.multimedia.erotica.lesbians, and the second time was with a.b.sex.magazines.

My storage is age is set to 5000, so there should be virtually no deleting of headers. So far it's been relatively small groups, but if this happens to a.b.multimedia or something it could take days to rebuild the spool.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
thwartme

Do you have a storage age set for that group? Look in the group properties. Right click menu in the groups list. Might check the parent topic too.

I've not seen any lost header data yet.

No, I don't have group-specific settings for either storage age or display age.

Ok. Then I don't know. Might be worth wiping the group and re-downloading headers from scratch.

Just had a thought...

One of the things I do is put more than one group in a folder, and then activate/deactivate groups within that folder to view the headers seperately.

For example: In my group list I've got a folder called "Adult". This has a number of different adult groups in it, mostly set to inactive at any given time. I load the headers from one active group, say a.b.multimedia.erotica.lesbians, view (right click on the folder title, select 'show posts', set to 10 days) and add whatever I want to the download list. Then I close the view window, deactivate a.b.multimedia.erotica.lesbians, activate a.b.sex.magazines, update headers and view that group.

Do you think the activating/deactivating different groups under the same folder might be related to the historical headers disappearing?

Thanks,

Checking and unchecking the groups doesn't do what you think it does. All that check mark does is determine whether headers download for that group when you download headers for all groups. If you load up the groups individually, you'll only see one group in the tab. You'd have to load the parent topic up to load all the groups at once into the tab.

So, I'd suggest not checking and unchecking. Just leave them enabled. This is a clue though that might point to your problem. Checking and unchecking should have no impact on stored headers but, it's something worth looking into.

This just happened again. Same group, a.b.multimedia.erotica.lesbians. I am now re-downloading all headers for a third time. 141,940,663 headers.

WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN AND HOW CAN I MAKE IT STOP?

Thank you,

There is a "Delete all posts" in the right click menu. Only thing I can think of. Newsbin doesn't listen to the news server for purge information. It's all done through the age ranges.

But not ALL posts are deleted. This time, I had headers going back to mid-November of '14. About 60 days worth.

Does that correlate with the display age?

Nope. Display age is set to 10.

I don't know then. Are you sure your security software isn't removing the files?
