Question about incomplete vs Searched posts

When I update a group, posts I want will often have an incomplete icon next to it. Then I use the Search window, the same post will come up as complete. I love having the Search feature, but wondering if there is a reason this is happening and is there anything I can do to fix it.

What version of Newsbin and what News server are you using?

You might want to upgrade to the latest version.

You're comparing two different things. The completion of our search servers which is on a database we run and the completion of the headers you download from your server. It sounds like you're having problems getting complete records from your server.

For you headers not to be complete:

1- There's either a problem with the server and they're not complete on the server.

2 - They're complete on the server but, something happens to the data between the time it's downloaded and displayed.

When you look down at the status bar, do you see a number in parens near the word "Cache"?

Ah ok. I understand now about what the search button does vs refreshing groups from Usenet. Makes sense.

I just upgraded as well (2 min ago).

There is no number in the parenthesis in the Cache.

Also, after I download the thread in the search tab, the groups tab that initially had it as incomplete, then shows the download complete icon if that helps any.

So I'm glad I pay for the search option in any case. What server do you guys use to do that? lol

It sounds like just a timing issue. That the files are incomplete them become complete when the headers finish importing into the database (on your PC). Searching shouldn't make the existing files complete because the subjects of the search results aren't exactly the same as from headers.

Things are constantly being added to the groups. If you download headers, then spend some time searching, in that time the records on your server might become complete but, you won't see them complete until you download the latest headers again.

We use Giga and Astra.

Thanks so much for the explanation.

The files never do update as complete even days later after the Search shows a complete so they aren't updating even after a refresh. Definitely a fault with Usenet it sounds like.

Hmmm.. curiouser and curiouser.

I went to Usenetserver site and did a search for a file that shows incomplete on the groups page and was able to create an .nzb file and with that download it fully.
So it seems the file is complete on Usenets side, just not showing complete on Newsbin even after a 'Download the latest groups updates' button. Is there some other way in Newsbin that would refresh previously reported incompletes?

Set a "Download age" of say 10 days. Then right click the group "Post Storage/Use Download Age". Then download headers normally.

If this seems to fix the last 10 days worth of files. You might want to go into the "really advanced" section of the server options and change the overlap to 1000. This means every header download it'll re-download 1000 headers it should have already gotten (which isn't that many). It could be a synchronization error between servers so, things are off a couple posts here and there.

Thanks so much Quade.
Will give that a shot next time it happens.
