Download speed slows down

If Newsbin 6.51 is the selected and highlighted application then my downloads speeds are typically around 50 to 70 Mbps and sometimes approaching my broadband download speed of 120 Mbps (10 Mbps uplink). If I leave Newsbin 6.51 running in the background then sometimes after a few minutes the download speed gradually slows to just 1.5 Mbps. Selecting Newsbin 6.51 again results in an instant restoration of download speed.

I have tried adjusting my connection limits but I have not observed an improvement. In the status bar my Cache indicator rapidly ranges up and down between 12/200 (0) to 99/200 (0) . What does this mean?

Any ideas on what is causing this download speed fluctuation and any suggestions for how to resolve this inconvenience?

My system spec and environment are...
Windows 8.1, 3.5GHz i7 CPU with 4 cores (8 cores with hyper threading), 32GB RAM, Wired 1GHz Ethernet
Giganews (using 25 out of 50 connections)
Astraweb (using 10 out of 20 connections)

I get a constant 100-110 Mbps with 10 connections each to AW and Giga. What you're describing is either a disk bottleneck or maybe a priority issue where Newsbin is starved for CPU. How long do you have to wait for it to slow down? I've got it minimized here downloading and it's maintaining 100 Mbps. In Win8, in task manager, in the performance tab how about looking at the disk icon? My disk is averaging about 30% at 100 Mbps. At 100 Mbps my Newsbin is using 4-5% CPU load.

The cache line represents the number of blocks of file data that are in memory. When it's 0/200 that means Newsbin has to stop downloading and wait for the disk to catch up. Normally, you never want it to go to zero. Are you just downloading to a normal internal disk?

It's been about 5 minutes now and it's maintaining it's speed.

I might tell your virus scanner/firewalls to ignore the download and Newsbin's data folder too.

Thanks for the advice. It could also have something to do with screensaver and/or inactivity time. It could be the index service kicking in. I can't faithfully reproduce the problem so I will monitor and see what happens.

Yeah, I have all that stuff disabled.

Hi,

This thread is quite old, but I notice the same issue there. I use NB 6.6 build 4163.
When NB is on the foreground, it downloads at full speed.
If another application is in foreground (so NB is on the background), the download speed decreases from 20MBps to 500KBps. When it comes back to foreground (I switch between Chrome to NB as an example) the speed goes back to 20MBps.
I am under W10 Pro.
I didn't pay attention when the issue starts, usually I keep NB in the foreground.
Any idea

Thanks in advance

Fabrizio

I've not actually seen it myself. I have seen other reports of it though. I can minimize and watch task manager. The speed seems to remain the same. Wonder if bumping Newsbin's priority in task manager would impact this? Make it high priority and see if this still happens.

Well, looks like after 2 or 3 restarts of my computer everything goes back good... Thanks anyway
