Is there a way to skip downloads by filename with NZB's?

I download NZB's that contain sample media. They always have sample something in the file name. Is there a way when the NZB is loaded into NB to skip these files?

Hi, you could uncheck Download Double-Clicked NZB in the NZB options.
After that you can when added a nzb to newsbin choose wich items you want to download from that nzb.

Do you want to avoid downloading the Sample files? If so you can do this by using a NZB Loading filter (specified under Options->NZB Files) that can be used to filter out entries from the NZB file.

Yeah, I'm thinking the loading filter is what you want. Lets you filter out or filter in specific subject elements. Don't use the filename filters, just the subject filter part.

I'm confused why I would not want to use the filename filters? The NZB will contain the video with a sample. I only want the full video not the sample. The sample file name will need to be wildcarded because it contains the word 'sample' in the full filename. So how would I filter that?

Do you know how to use the current filters?
You make a new filter, Add "sample" in the "Subject Reject" section. Then assign it as the "NZB Load Filter". You don't need any wildcards, "sample" is enough.

Because filename filters aren't applied until after the file is downloaded. Newsbin doesn't know the real filename until this occurs. The supposed filename is in the subject, that's why you want to use the subject filter. It filters based on the subject *before* it downloads the file.

Yeah, I missed that nuance. Dex is correct but, in this instance, you use the subject filters because that's how I coded it to work.

It works, so I'm happy.

This is GREAT! I have been trying to figure out how to do this!
Question: Say that, in addition to killing all files whose subject contains the word SAMPLE, I also want to dump all files that contain SUBS or .SRR files.
Do I need to make two filters, or do I need to modify the filter so that it will filter SUBJECT and/or SUBS and/or .SRR? If the latter, how?
Thanks!

You can have multiple lines (entries) in a filter. Add one for each item you want rejected. You only need items on a single line if you want a compound criteria.

It does not work for me with extensions like .url, .svf, .srr. I am going to assume those are not on the subject line so it can't filter them.

Typically they are. How are you entering the filter?
"[.]url" is how I'd enter it. Don't add the quotes.
Hit the pause button, load the NZB the normal way and then check the download list. See what files show up.
Keep in mind that if these files are mentioned by the PAR files, they might get generated after the download during repair. In that case you might want to use the "Post UnRAR" filter.....
It can delete the files after the unrar.

SO... I have given the "subject filter" as described above a try, filtering keyword "SAMPLE", and it just does not work.
Here are two filesets that I tested from NZBs:
<don't post what you're downloading>
In both cases, all of the files in the fileset were downloaded, including all of the SAMPLE files.
????
I suppose I could set this as a filename filter, too, but that defeats most of the purpose of doing it in the first place, which is saving the time and bandwidth necessary to do the downloads, and also to reduce the clutter in the download directory. I think someone said Newsbin couldn't tell what the filename is until it has been downloaded, but this is just silly, at least with regard to download lists from an NZB file. The files names are right there; I can see them. If I can see the word SAMPLE in a line of the download queue, Newsbin should be able to filter out that line BEFORE downloading.
What's up with this???
Suggestions?

I'll come up with a step by step procedure and post it here. If it's not working it's likely that something is missing from your setup.
Don't post what you're downloading here. It's against the forum rules and generally unwise.
As for filename filters. They'll kill a download after the first chunk when used as a normal filter. Filename filters don't work at all for filtering NZB's. You have to use the subject "reject" filters only. What did you enter in the subject reject line? "sample" is all you should need.

It's working for me, but as Quade mentioned many times the par rebuild set includes the sample file so it gets recreated.

Don't forget about the "post unrar" filter too. It can kill unrared files you don't want.

Sorry for the security slip-up, Quade. I thought it would be helpful for you to see some files that didn't work.
Yes, I put the word sample by itself in the "subject reject" filter and checked the ENABLE FILTER box. The other three filters are empty and ENABLE is not checked. The 4 items at the top of the filter window are all set to "none".
The SAMPLES were not in the PAR2 set, gquiring.
I'll be happy to try your procedure.

Any luck with this step-by-step procedure, Quade?

Any progress on this, Quade?
The best kluge I have found is to place Newsbin Pro in pause, load in all of my NZBs, then sort the Newsbin download list by size. For any given file type in the download set, the file sizes are about the same... so the .NFO sort together, the .SFVs sort together, the .SRRs sort together, etc. It is easy to group-select and delete everything but the main RAR set (always the biggest files) and the .PAR2s.
Still, though, the first rule of programming is that the human shouldn't have to do things manually that the computer can do automatically...

I'm not getting why it doesn't work for you. Are you using the NZB autoload folders or manually dragging and dropping the NZB's onto Newsbin?

Essentially, dragging & dropping. Actually, I subscribe to an indexing service. It delivers up the requested NZBs in a ZIP file. I download the zip, open it, and double-click the NZB files inside one-by-one.
The NZB file contains the details for the whole fileset: the main RAR, plus the NFO and SFV and SUB and, often one or more sample files + PAR2s for the sample.
The think that keeps this from working, I think, is that the uploader typically uses a fixed description for the entire file set, samples and all. The word SAMPLE dies not appear in the description. But, on the line items in Newsbin, the description is followed with the file name, which WILL include the word SAMPLE, if appropriate. The "don't download" filter looks at the description but not the file name, even though Newsbin knows what that file name is.
I understand that there is a file name filter, but that only deletes the file after downloading it, right? That defeats the whole purpose of deleting it, which is saving the time and download bytes for downloading the sample.
After all, Newsbin DOES know the name of the file when the NZB is opened. If Newsbin can display the file name on the screen, it cam make decisions about it.

I'm guessing the filtering only applies if you use the NZB loading folder. Basically, you set a path in the options, Newsbin will watch this path and any NZBs, RARS with NZB or ZIPs with NZB's you drop into this folder will get fed to the download list. Newsbin will unzip/unrar them automatically.
I'll check the code out tonight to verify this.
