Same-O-Same-O Children at the Helm at NBP

I have win8, but bypass the childrens' area and run everything from desktop icons, invoking administrator's level. Actually I am a god. The problem is major. I set the data folder to an external USB HDD, of which I now have 16 each 2 TB size. NOTHING but essential opsys & programs are kept on the system drive, allowing for daily complete drive imaging to the appropriate external HDD.

Newsbin is always run from a desktop icon. Half the time I run it the data folder is started up down in the obnoxious "users" area of the system drive. You know how you've made it difficult  to switch to the external HDD and what the hell do I do to merge my giant "downloaded" folder to reduce duplicates.

How do I move my data folder back off the system drive, keeping my loging files in good shape???

It reverts to the default if it can't set the data folder you speced. Sounds like the drive is offline 1/2 the time and Newsbin gives up and reverts. Could be the drive is just asleep and wakes up but, Newsbin isn't waiting around for it to spun up .

I think you need to verify that the drive is spun up and accessible before you start Newsbin.

The drives are up 100%; nothing in my system sleeps, or screen-saver or whatever.
However, I think you hit the mark. win8 is very slow opsys, and I typically have a lot of complex programs running. It often takes 30sec for winamp to spool up and start the music. However this isn't a case of newsbin getting to put itself ahead of my commands. It should simply report the failure and try again. NOT EVER should it choose another location for the data folder. Only morons and children get bent when it takes a program to take 5min or less to launch. newsbin should do only what I programmed it to do. Tchecker file, and losing that so newsbin can pop out like a teenage pimple into fractured uselessness 9s a horror. A horror!. his is very important. newsbin, wait your turn to access system resources. How do I fix this? It is not my system doing anything wrong. Thank you?

pls pardon spelling, etc. it is hard to type with one eye and a 45 scootin' around on the kb.

Sounds like you need to figure out when it happens then and then determine why. I gave you my idea.

Do you only use a single configuration file?

My data folder is on the X: drive and it never moves so, I think focusing on the external drives is the way to go. Newsbin doesn't do anything on it's own but, it does try to recover from messed up installs. That's what this sounds like.

OK. thanks for the idea. I think there is no way I can tell if your huge encrypted special-extension files have a slipped bit or not. I will accept that as a tip instead of a slap.

All the configuration is in a text file that ends in NBI which contains the configuration for where the data folder goes. The tool I use for looking at that is "wordpad".

Then it will be simple enough to check the rejected file for errors. You know as well as I do that your program takes a delay as a fail. There's nothing at all with my install. It worked for 200 sessions and 200+ gigabits of files. And get this very straight with your flawed programming — if something goes wrong, do the manly thing and throw up an error message, with remedial instructions, and HALT operations. DON'T throw my config in the trash and start over, ignoring gigabytes of duplicate file info (that in itself is such a good feature I'm quite surprised you'd toss it in the trash — — the only error is a drives' failure to pop your pimple on time. Jeezus, kids — wait your turn! :(

It's not "Delay" that makes this fail. It's outright failure to talk to the data folder. Windows reporting "sorry, not here". Even then I don't know if this is what's happening to you. I'm just guessing. If your theory's is correct, manually opening the data folder with explorer before you start Newsbin would be all you need to solve this problem.

To be clear, I don't really know what your problem is. Everybody else and his brother can change the data path and it sticks. So, the question is what are you doing differently? So, my comment about reverting the datapath, that's just a guess. You say your drives never spin down. If that's the case, my guess is wrong. Got nothing else to go on though so, it's on you to figure out why it's happening then tell me.

Until you characterize the problem and let me know when it tends to happen, there's nothing I can do. I'm left with one guy reporting that his data folder is moving with no kind of way to trouble-shoot it. All I'm getting from you is "it doesn't work" which is pretty useless for trouble-shooting.

Fair, enough, Quade. I have a hugely complex system and win8 sucks as an opsys. I'm not a programmer and don't intend to be one again after abandoning visual basic years ago. I'll try your idea of actively accessing the data folder (I use xplorer2 and recommend it over windows explorer, which literally chokes on my enormity of files). Thanks for your help. :)
