ERROR - Unable to Update Data record

Hi guys,

I have just upgraded my systems to include a Windows 2012 Standard Server with a heap of storage. The idea being that I would keep all my downloads and other stuff on it. I figured that it would be best to install Newsbin on that machine as opposed to having a share to store the data on. This way I would have one less copy over the my network. (Download to workstation and workstation to databases on the server).

The problem I am having is that when I attempt to download a large group (alt.b.boneless for example) it seems to work for a bit and then my logs get the following messages:
ERROR - Unable to Update Data record: for every single record.

I have tired the following:

1) Purge the group and start a download all headers. Same results after a few minutes.
2) Reinstall newsbin from scratch (deleting everything including my settings)

The servers I have tried are SuperNews and xsusenets free account.

If anyone has any suggestions, I will gladly try them.

Newsbin is one of the best programs I have uses for accessing news groups.

This sounds to me like a permissions issue on the Newsbin data folder? Have you checked how the permissions on that folder (and its contents) are for the user you are using to run Newsbin.

One way to do a quick check is start Newsbin using the "Run as Admin" option. If this fixes the issue then you almost certainly have a permissions problem.

Thanks for the quick reply.

1) I was running as Admin - not a good solution in my opinion but ok for testing.
2) The permissions were Users - Full Control - on G:\Newsbin and all items and subfolders.
3) I changed the permissions to Everyone - Full control as a test and had the same issue.

After all of these tests the problem still persisted.

I have currently uninstalled newsbin and will try to install it again.

Although that may be a sign of insanity, doing the same thing over and over expecting different results

Ok guys,

Maybe this has something to do with this.

The system has a 250 GB ssd as the boot drive. This is also where the User directories get created.

For some reason even when I specify a directory to install newsbin to, the data directory is created on the drive.

As some of these groups are frigging huge I can clog up the boot drive with the header data. How does one install this so that I have ALL my data/setting/etc on a different drive.

Oh and during install if you wont let someone download more than 100 days then say that, don't say enter 1 to 100, we don't recommend downloading more than 100 day. Its not that your don't recommend it your don't allow that initial setting.

Sounds like disk corruption to me. If it works and then quits working like that. I might try the data folder on a different drive and see what happens. Sqlite does not like network shares. That's the database that Newsbin uses. Not saying that's the problem but, it's something to keep in mind.

I believe that the default location for this is in the users profile.

Instructions for changing the data folder are specified here.

Hi Guys,

Since everyone was so quick to reply I wanted to post back with the status of this.

1) This last reinstall seems to have fixed the issue.
2) The first change was to have the directory I installed to have everyone - full control permissions.
3) The second change was to do the move of the data directory as per the link provided.

On that note please take this suggestion for a future release.

During the install process provide a way to set the data directory as well as the install directory.
Since the default is on the system volume on 95+% of the systems, this will slow the OS (due to disk contention) and (as in my case) fill up my system partition.

While the process described in the link did work it is cumbersome. While the installer does allow you to change the install directory, that is only a minuscule amount of space compared to the gargantuan amount of data the header and downloads take.

Anyway thanks for the quick response and have a wonderful day.

I've been getting this error with 6.5, for only certain groups.

I deleted all the spool files and redownloaded headers for those groups and got the same error again.

These are groups that don't have compacted posts, small posts as one file in 2 or 3 chunks.

There is a corresponding error when doing ctrl-I or queuing for download. "Resolver: Unable to find Download Data"
