slow header downloads

Postby Smoker » Sun Jun 02, 2013 9:09 am

I am using Newsbin Pro 6.42 Build 2148
Tried downloading all headers for example alt.binaries.boneless
It is still downloading after 18 hours

Frustrated I tried GrabIt http://www.shemes.com/
Downloaded the all the headers in 3 minutes.

What gives ?

I'm skeptical that you downloaded 6 billion headers in 3 minutes. Something tells me it's a Apples to oranges comparison.

What server are you using?

I agree it couldn't of been 6 billion

news.giganews.com

What frustrates me is the extremely slow rate, 25-40 MBps

That's giganews. If you were using Astraweb, it would be 2-3 times faster.

I think Giga has a per connection throttle.

I've heard astraweb has many more missing articles though :(

There was a perfect storm of outrage a while back that had articles deriding astraweb for crimes against humanity because they had some missing chunks and mostly because they supposedly did auto-takedowns(as opposed to everyone else who apparently pay hundreds of legal secretaries to meticulously comb through all takedown requests to verify their legitimacy - bullshit alert). I guess those people weren't happy with what they got for all of their $10 a month. Lately Giga has had a number of issues, lots of takedowns, speed issues, but the usual suspects seem quiet about it this time. <shrug> A fickle bunch.

I'm not saying Astra rocks and Giga sucks(although I've been using astra for some time now and pretty happy), I'm saying there are always issues that crop up with every provider from time to time, with plenty of usenet rage to spread around. I'd just try them out for yourself for a month and see what you think, after all it's not really a lot of money to spend.

AW is all I use these days for headers

Honestly, Giga is less reliable than AW for oldish posts > 1000 days or so. Something happened at the server end, they lost data and never restored it. For newish data, they're about the same . AW also has a band of missing posts probably 600 days ago but, it good on either side of that. I use AW and Giga combined to get nearly 100% downloads. Cheap Giga tier and the already cheap AW tier.

Well said as i have been thinking the same thing for some time that DThor only purpose on this forum seems to be to blame users and their hardware.

If i had come to the forum first before buying Newsbin then it wouldn't have exactly filled me with Confidence in buying it compared to being treated so well and welcoming by the mods on the Sabnzb forum.

Just Sayin.

Sorry if it came off that way. First off, I'm no mod here, just a user(unless you count the linux forum). Secondly, I was literally making a suggestion to try astra out and not be led astray by what I personally consider to be a lot of repetitive complaining by certain people over a service they pay ten bucks a month for, and it being somewhat unfair since the same and worse happens with other providers. I don't get a kickback if that's what you think. I'm a big believer in vote with your money. If you were one of those people, well, that's what I think so there ya go.

I never 'blame' user's gear. Someone saying they downloaded all of boneless headers in 3 minutes? Well, I never even made a comment about that, actually...so what does that have to do with anything?

I blame user's PC's all the time. It's because they're all different and most are indifferently maintained.

That said, I'm not see any commenting pointing fingers at the users in this topic. We were talking about servers so, I don't know where cocha's flame came from.

I deleted it if anyone wants to know.
