If you mean the NZB Autoload folder - then I think it is something like 4 years!

Relatively recent. That's where all the headers download to these days. Made no sense to download them to the individual groups. Now there's a central place to look. The files in the folder get read and fed into the proper groups.

But doesn't that double the disk in/out being fed to the drive twice with import and move and the extra drive buffering alongside with other tasks?

With ref to the increase in space usage.... I've been having issues loading headers over the last few days. Cannot see why having downloaded a few 000 they don't show when groups are viewed/refreshed. Decided to upgrade to 6.73RC2 = no change. Did a full uninstall & clean reinstall.
Still seems not quite right on header handling & now I have <9gb headers + <10gb 'import' folder - previously I had a <10gb NB folder & now it's >20gb. No header filters installed (yet). So what am I doing wrong?
Solution is to download the latest beta and install a header filter to keep a majority of spam out of your database.
In your case, you are going to want to blow away your header backlog too, then re-download headers after you install the filter. You remove the backlog by deleting the files in the Import folder which is in your Newsbin Data Folder. Go under Options -> Settings and click "Open Data Folder" to find it.

Thanks Dexter. I hadn't gotten around to reading that thread. I wondered why my RAM was being flooded... I had a corrupt DB a while back & automatically figured that was my problem instead of comprehending that news ! Bet the Server farms are loving this a-hole.
Just dropped in a filter & NB is now working as req'd. Will try a fresh header d/l later.
