how do I save search results for later download?

Postby beany » Mon Dec 17, 2012 10:38 pm

Hi, I've got 18000 items in search tab. Where do I put them so that I can process them later?
Thanks

Is this from Local search? If so you can select them, right-click, and select "Save Files to Custom List". The list will show up in the Groups list and you can reload it later and select items for download. If it's Internet Search, you'd use up all your searches if you did that, I only recommend custom lists for local search or headers.

yes its an internet search. 18000/2000 has used 9 searches. Do more searches get used up when they are added to a custom list? - why is that?
so...what is the best way to do this? maybe this way... 1. perform the search 2. check what groups appear in the search content 3. download all headers for all those groups 4. search on these headers and add to a custom list. 5 select for download when appropriate. ??? seems a long way round tho.
cheers

I'd say there is no good way to do with with internet search currently. I'm planning on adding something like this for the future. Dex is doing upgrades to the search server that will lend them selves to this too. You could add them to the download list.

HI I've just tried this will a small selection of files. I'm a little confused as to why you say I'd use up all my searches. From what I've seen testing, the only time a search is done is at the start via the search tab. no further searches appear to be lost when saving to the custom list. To lose 9 searches on 18000 items when they can then be searched /downloaded later with no further search cost seems good to me. Am I missing something?

I'm in the middle of transitioning from counting searches to counting number of files resolved. People have complained that the current search limits don't make sense. I don't want you to get used to something that is about to change. This specific action you are talking about hits the search server to resolve the files even though you aren't downloading them yet. The change we want to put in place is to allow this action without having to do a full resolve.

If you did this now, it'll take about 5 hours to resolve all the files because there is a throttle in place to keep people from hammering the server when selecting a bunch of posts to download. That's the biggest reason that processing a large number of files like this is more efficient from headers than from Internet Search. Internet Search was designed for people to find specific items and queue specific items for download. It wasn't designed to handle queuing thousands of files at a time.
