jpe files are same as jpeg - why don't they get thumbnailed?

Postby stormblast » Tue Nov 20, 2012 4:53 am

The subject line says it all. Files with the extension .jpe are locked out of Newsbin's thumbnail display. According to Google searches .jpe are virtually identical to .jpg and .jpeg files. Is there a way to manually set the file types recognized for thumbnailing or can you fix this oversight in a future version of Newsbin? Soon please? Thanks.

Because they're not jpg or jpeg. I could probably add a case for them.

Not to belabor the point but:

"A rose by any other name..." is still a rose.

http://www.fileinfo.com/extension/jpe

Some cameras (i.e. Minolta, Sony) create jpeg files with the .jpe extension to indicate a low-res version of a .jpg for emailing or to indicate that the file contains a color profile. Either way a .jpe file still meets the Joint Photographic Engineering Group specification for jpeg files and they are both editable and displayable with the same .jpeg/.jpg codecs, requiring no additions to the operating system. As far as Newsbin is concerned .jpe files can (and should) be treated the same way a .jpeg or .jpg file is recognized for thumbnails. Other application writers who have encountered the same issue usually, eventually fix it so as not to tick off users who are inconvenienced by it. So, thanks in advance.... A loyal Newsbin user.

I'm saying it's not working because the files don't end in "jpg" or "jpeg". It has nothing to do with the content. I have a list of files I consider to be images and JPE's aren't on the list.

"[.](png|jpg|jp2|jpeg|gif|bmp|tiff|tif)",

versus

"[.](png|jpg|jp2|jpeg|jpe|gif|bmp|tiff|tif)"

It's not a political or technical issue.
