Help with "Error: Response: 420 No Articles Selected" error

Hi,
New here, all that jazz. I've been using NBPro for a long time and suddenly came upon this problem and am looking for some help. I upgraded to the newest release 6.40, and suddenly began having errors returned on only a few random groups [full disclosure: upgraded to 6.4, has this error, peeled back to 5.59 build 9826, resulting in same issue]. The error message I received is:

[00:19:52] Level: ERROR SERVER=news.newshosting.com, MSG=Server: news.newshosting.com SendCommand - Error: Response: 420 No Articles Selected

What does this error mean? I can't figure out why it is showing up. I tried to do research some to see if I could figure it out, but to no avail. I know for a fact this group I'm pulling up headers for is around because I can pull up to-the-minute data from them via the Newshosting free reader. I've not run into this problem pulling info down before, so any help is greatly appreciated.

Additional possibly relevant info: using SSL connection, all default settings.

That is odd. Can you test a non-ssl server of theirs? It looks to me like something is getting between you and them (like an anti virus) and munging the communication. You can also try completely disabling any AV, firewall, etc. to see if that's related.

That's a weird error.

The RFC (the thing that defines how usenet works) suggests that a command is being sent to the server with no message-id.

How often does it happen?

I can uncheck the SSL option in NBpro and I receive the same results.

And it happens only on specific groups. Many groups I can pull down headers and download files with no problem at all.

@DThor- I thought it could be an AV prog or firewall, but it would (in theory) stop all headers/files from loading as everything uses the same ports, right?

I'd contact the server people about this. It's an error you should never see because of how Newsbin talks to the server.

Newshosting has had some issues with headers in the past couple weeks. I wonder if this is related.

Here's a follow up: I tried to pull down the headers again tonight on this group (don't know if the group name would be helpful, if so, let me know) and I received the error all over the place again. However it is downloading... somehow. I have my settings set to not display or download anything older than 15 days as to limit the time it takes. Currently, the group, in the download tab, shows it downloading the size 59,667,000/563,673,363 which seems like a gigantic amount.

Could it be that the sheer size of the header was causing the issue? Or is that completely unrelated and this noob is just grasping at explanations

And again, I can pull info from the newshosting provided client fine, I would just prefer to use newsbin as it's a superior program and all.

Thanks again, too, to you all for taking the time to read about this issue, I really appreciate it!

Your error isn't with the downloading of headers, it's from the process of downloading files.

Currently, the group, in the download tab, shows it downloading the size 59,667,000/563,673,363

I'm not sure how this is possible with Newshosting. last I checked they had a 120 million post cap on all groups. Only Astraweb and Giganews seem to be able to deliver full 1400 days worth of headers. If you really want to limit it 15 days, I'd suggest deleting the header download. Right click the group select "Post Storage/Use Download Age" then set the "Download Age" to 15. Then do a "download latest".

Giganews has some groups with 4-5 billion posts so, the number itself isn't impossible. Just unlikely on Newshosting.
