I have been using NB for a long time on this computer with little problems. There is nothing i know of that has been changed. it is possible that there were MS auto-updates.
It just started crashing a few days ago. it crashes a few minutes after loading. i tried reinstalling the latest version with no difference in crash frequency.
My system is Vista home premium SP2

I assume you're using it when it crashes? It would be useful to know what sort of operations you're doing, and of course trying to make it crash when doing a specific operation could be useful too. For example, loading headers.
One thing to try is, when you've quit Newsbin, to rename the downloads.db3 file then start again and see if it makes a difference. This is in the data folder, you can find that in Options/Open Data Folder. That removes any files already in the queue, just so you know.
Are you running 32 or 64 bit? Also, a slight shot in the dark but you never know, try disabling any antivirus you're running. I've not been aware of those actually killing Newsbin, but maybe some weird permission thing...

It is working on the download list. i haven't added anything to the list since it started this crashing. All I have been doing is starting it.
If i move the download list (db3) can i move it back to try to keep the list? Is there anyway to look at the list?
DBase? etc? So i could scan for errors? or save what i can from the download file?
Thanks!

sorry- 32bit. I have an antivirus running, but that has been running for years alongside NB with no problems.

Did you see the MOTD message about crashing and the download list? The recommendation is to delete the download list.
In the options:
- "Open Data Folder"
- Exit Newsbin.
- Delete "Downloads.db3"
- Restart.
This will wipe the download, wish and failed list.

I have similar issues. NewsBin Pro has been rock stable since years. Suddenly I get crashes. I think after the last stable version update to v6.32 build 1879, but the crash report says v6.3.1.0.
To speed NewsBin up I frequently delete
- Downloaded.db3
- Downloads.db3
- DownloadMarker.db3
- SIGNATURE.db3
...only if my download queue is empty and after exiting NewsBin. I did this after two crashes and it didn't help.

You've got something else going on. The vast majority of users don't have these issues, and you certainly shouldn't be deleting those files on a regular basis.

I'll try deleting the DB3's and see what happens too. Thanks.

There is nothing else what could go on. It's a very small Windows XP Barebone with only Newsbin Pro an QuickPar installed - absoluteley nothing else. The only other influence could be a recent Microsoft patch. I'll try to figure out what's going on, do harddisk checks, logging, etc....
...and deleting those files is absolutely no problem and Quade would'nt suggest this sometimes. I don't need the "dupe" signatures or a "history" of already downloaded stuff, so NewsBin may create them new as if it has been a fresh install. On a very small system deleting these files speeds NewsBin up noticeably, for example starting NewsBin took me about half a minute with a very large Database set reading those (think it was ~ 40 MB), after deleting the database files startup is instant again.

Quade might be right, your aggressive deleting might be revealing a real bug.
Btw, you can just disable the signature matching from options, that's a far better approach than deleting the file constantly, since you're doing checksum matching on every download needlessly. If you've already done this, that file isn't being touched.

I deleted all my DB3's a couple times and didn't get any crashing. I tried 32 and 64 bits. How about NOT deleting the DB3's for a couple days and see if the crashing goes away? It might have nothing to do with the DB3's. This would be one way to test that.
What is it you doing when it's crashing?
I wonder if it's significant that it's XP?

Sorry for leading this completely into the wrong direction:
I delete my db3 files usually once every three or four months when my barebone gets noticeably slow. I had never problems with doing this.
Suddenly I have frequent crashes after the last update to to v6.32 build 1879. Quade suggested to delete the mentioned db3 files because the database could have been corrupted. I did this. Now they are completely new from scratch, but crashes happened after doing this.
Conclusion: The crashes have nothing to do with corrupted db3 files or Newsbin rebuilding them because they are missing.
I use Newsbin in a very passive way: 100% usage of autoload folders and Newsbin does the downloading, autopar, unrar. The the only real "usage" is sorting the download queue.
My Usenet computer is a very old VIA CPU barebone which is very silent and runs 24/7. I'm certain Win7 will not perform on this machine and I don't want to change a running system.

I am having a similar problem. In the last few days Newsbin will completely lock up on me about halfway through my downloads. I have completely uninstalled, rebooted, re-installed, re-configured and the same thing happens. I have run a complete AVG scan and Malwarebytes scan. The same thing happens with Newsbin when I boot into safe mode with networking and try to download. This is an old Windows XP machine that needs to have the OS re-installed from scratch. I am going to do that soon. That should at least help me determine if it was something outside of Newsbin causing it.
Any other suggestions?

It's conceivable it's a somehow 'corrupt' system, but that wouldn't be my first guess. Anti-virus and similar 'scanning' products as you inferred is the best first place to look. Completely and utterly disable them(if that's even really possible - some are very intrusive) and see if that helps. Also, I assume you're not pushing NB too hard on a 32 bit system - having other intensive tasks running concurrently can cause memory issues.
Getting the specifics is useful, such as does it only happen when downloading? Do you have autopar enabled and does it tend to happen more often when there's unrarring/repairing happening concurrently with downloading? Quade is working on a switch to optionally make Newsbin even less harder on system resources for older machines, but in the end there will always be some stress.

Common denominator seems to be XP. I need to test some under XP.

AutoPAR/RAR seems to be the issue on mine. I have disabled it, downloaded some of the NZBs that locked it up previously then manually ran QuickPAR and WinRAR without issue.

I did significant testing under XP for 6.33 with no issues including repairs. Now this was XP under VMWare so, it still used my core CPU which was an i7.
Is this an AMD machine? If you think the problem is autopar, I'd suggest installing the single core repair DLL. There are known issues with multicore and some AMD CPU's. Not really surprising because Intel made TBB.DLL which makes multicore possible.
As an experiment too, you could look for the latest open source TBB.DLL and see if it works better. I have to supply commercial TBB.DLL because Newsbin is commercial. I suspect the OS version of TBB.DLL will work too though. I admit I haven't tried this.
http://threadingbuildingblocks.org/ver.php?fid=185Edit: I tested with the OS TBB.DLL and it worked. So, if you have a multi-core par DLL, you might want to use this TBB.DLL and see if anything changes.

It is and AMD CPU, that may be the problem. How do I install the single core repair dll?

Download the ZIP file, open it up
32 bits
- Code: Select all
\tbb40_20120408oss_win.zip\tbb40_20120408oss\bin\ia32\vc10\tbb.dll
64 bits
- Code: Select all
tbb40_20120408oss_win.zip\tbb40_20120408oss\bin\intel64\vc10\tbb.dll
Exit Newsbin and copy this into the newsbin install folder. I'd probably backup the existing tbb.dll file just in case. if you start Newsbin and it warns about not being able to load par2....dll you might try copying the other one into place.

Just an update, it must have been something screwed up in general on my machine. It was well overdue for a re-install of Windows. After the re-install, everything works fine.

That's good to hear. I'm wondering if it's about time I re-install too.
