How to initiate backup on restart?

Once again I lost the current 6.3 nbi when my Windows froze and I had to hardreset. On starting NB all server and other data was missing. I searched all five drives for *.NBI and found just one with today's date (crash date). I also searched for Newsbin.bak but found nothing.

I was resigned to having lost the duplicate check database so reentered my two newsgroups server data. Then I did something that I cannot recall that brought up a NB message asking me if I wanted to start a backup on restart. It gave me a selection of six NBI and I chose the last known working NBI. On the restart everything returned to as before the loss.

How is it possible for NB to recover in this way when I could not find any of the older NBI files by using Windows 7 search?

Dunno. Maybe a hidden setting in file explorer? It's also possible your nbi location is different than what you think and you didn't search in the right location.

Before you do anything else, make sure you're 100% certain you know which nbi is your current one, starting and stopping newsbin and checking the datestamp is brand new is a good method. Then, copy the file. Now you have your own backup outside of newsbin's single auto backup. I do this after every time I make significant changes to my configuration. It's worth it.

I believe that Newsbin now stores copies of recent .nbi files in something like the guiitems.db3 file which is why it can now offer this options.

Exactly. They're stored encrypted and compressed in the DB.

Quade,

I had already searched for and found the guiitems.db3 file but although I have an SQL editor I did not want to mess arround with it. Can you help me understand what I did that triggered the message "do you want to start backup on restart" (or similar words). Can this be manually done?

It's in the options menu. "Load Backup Configure....."

Click it, restart and Newsbin'll prompt you.
