Beta 4 Build 1747
If you delete groups.db3 and download a fresh list then some groups no longer show the correct amount of headers in the list.
For example alt.binaries.boneless get shoved down in the >1k list so it now looks like a near empty group.
It's not until you add the group and then choose download all headers that you will see that it is infact one of the largest groups. ?

Thanks.
Boneless ran into an old sanity checker in the code.
No group would ever get more than 4 billion posts in it? Dooh!

I don't see any of that. Please describe your system briefly and the os you're running.

rezzer is right newsbin has been like it for ages regardless of what os or hardware you run so you obviously either have a vey short groups list or you only tried to add only a few hundred groups.
if you try and add all 100,000 groups or a large chunk of say 40,000 groups newsbin will give a message of not responding and just hang for hours.

I was more referring to the crash reports when deleting posts(a hang is not a crash), but if I understand you, you're saying you're adding enough groups to get more than 25 million posts a day and you're having trouble? Same request - please indicate things like what you're running on, your data pipe, what usenet provider, etc. You're pushing into server territory, and if you're regularly requesting massive single pass header updates with an iffy connection, over wifi, with a non-server grade computer or a so-so commercial supplier, or for that matter any provider where you're just paying $12 a month, then there's a whole bunch of things that can go wrong. I'm not suggesting any of those things apply to you, don't get me wrong, but if you want to essentially be a usenet header mirror in a home environment, there's several things to consider. I know Quade pushes his tests pretty damned hard, but he's running it from a dummy server locally, since the point is to test Newsbin's tolerance, not the internet path.
This isn't to suggest there's categorically nothing wrong, but getting the whole story is helpful. Also - 'a message of not responding' - you just mean it doesn't respond, right? Have you tried adding in smaller chunks? Usenet is pretty huge.

At best, 3000 groups have meaningful content. I've never tried adding all 100K groups. I'm not really likely to either. If you waited long enough it would probably wake back up.

1 - You have to sort the list by count to put boneless on top. It doesn't magically KNOW that you want the largest group on top. You have to tell it.
2 - I never said you couldn't add more than 3000 groups, I said on usenet, only 3000 groups have real content. The rest contain text or spam. Adding more than 3000 groups is doable, just silly. 3000 is being conservative too. There's perhaps 50 groups or less with 90% of all usenet content in them.
Let me ask you, why do you want to add 1000's of empty groups to Newsbin's group listing?
Newsbin isn't designed around silly requirements. It's designed around real world usage. That's why I never tried to add 100,000 groups. I know that most of them are empty and a waste of time to mess with. You give me a real use case for adding 100,000 empty groups and I can make it do it.
