Media file renamer that renames folders too

Sorry if this isn't directly related to Newsbin; however, I thought this would be the best possible place to ask for a suggestion.

I am looking for the simplest possible tool that will rename both the media file (and folder it's in) to be a completely friendly name.

I have found a ton of utilities; but most of them only rename a media file name; not the folder it's in. I would like to simply double-click this rename application; and, it automatically/invisibly rename any media files (and directories they are in) in a pre-defined location/path.

I am looking for something that is as basic as possible; with the least amount of configuration/settings/options clutter.

Ultimately, I have a directory/file monitoring software which will execute this renaming software silently once a brand new media file is completely available (not locked/opened by newsbin).

The renaming part is easy. The harder part is defining the rules for how the files should be renamed.

What kind of rules would this renamer follow?

Actually, I found out the renaming part is not that easy. I spent a good hour of my time playing with one of the most popular rename apps... theRenamer only to find out that it's not smart enough to tell the difference between TV and movie files; even when it should be very obvious. So, it's impossible to automate it for both TV and movies.

My media center software is smart enough to tell the difference, but doesn't physically rename the files, it only changes it to a friendly name within the software.

As far as what I want to do with the file after it's name is... nothing. Keep it with the new file name. Also, the folder it's in needs to have the same name too.

Someone I just talked to suggested using SABnzbd; which has has pretty powerful postprocessing engine with an option to do what I want supposedly. I would prefer to keep a small standalone app; however, if it can be done easily in Newsbin as a post-processing tool, I would do consider that as well.

FWIW, I've recently started using sickbeard side by side with Newsbin and sabnzbd, it works well with both. Sickbeard is, however, intended for tv. It does a fairly good job with renaming 'standard' releases, as a rule they tend to follow pretty basic rules. Couch potato is a similar application, for non tv. I personally find it a little less reliable and useful, for that matter.

I prefer the newsbin engine over sab, it's far more robust. Sickbeard is good for the automated scraping, really is a good server option, and it plays quite nicely with Newsbin and the nzb auto download folder. There have been recent changes in Newsbin to work even better with sickbeard, the support for subdirectories in the auto download folder primarily.

I don't know how far you wanted to take this, perhaps installing other applications is more than you wanted to do, you could also leech through the sickbeard code and see how they handle their post processing, if you're keen.

There's been regular discussion on irc about newsbin post processing, running a bit more like a service engine with the interface to it a separate beast, as has any sort of improvement to post processing. I must admit, sickbeard has impressed me with how much it takes out of your hand. Much less of a grind.

Hi DT, yes, currently I use sickbeard sometimes for downloading bluray seasons to catch up on current TV shows. I use it's blackhole feature to work with Newsbin; as well as it's builtin renaming feature.

However, I don't use sickbeard nor couchpotato for ALL my needs. I was hoping there is a smart enough standalone renamer that would work with Newsbin. I found the app called "therenamer"; which seems to be very popular. However, it's not smart enough to process TV and movies in one folder automatically. I'm hoping to find a simple renaming application smart enough to process everything that ends up in the Newsbin downloads folder.

Having said that, I'm hoping that Newsbin will offer a more comprehensive post-processing "plugin" system on par with sabnzbd. I really don't want to use two different news readers.

Actually, I`m not sure you could find enough predictability in posting to make it possible, that`s actually why I don`t find couch potato as useful. It`s more all over the map once you leave TV. Still, it can't hurt to dream. And yes, having some parsing ability in NB would be nice.

Hi,

I would like a mod that would make it so that Media Mail would show up as an option ONLY for orders that contain books ONLY.
