Download still taking DAYS

Postby rogermass » Wed Jan 18, 2012 3:17 pm

I must be doing something wrong. Even with download age set at 10 I'm still getting 330,000,000 headers when I download latest. Is there ANY way I can just get the last 30 days (newest) headers? Thanks!

What groups are you trying. On the larger groups that is probably not even 30 days worth.

If you've already downloaded headers for the group, you have to reset the group to make "Download Age" work again. In 6.3, the group right click "Post Storage/Use Download Age" will do it. If you don't have 6.3, you can delete the "range.db3" for that group or right click "Post Storage/Delete Stored Posts"

How fast is your connection? How fast are the headers downloading?

That must be it. Resetting the age is the critical parameter that I was missing. Instead of 330,000,000 I can get any number and hopefully make it through. My connection is totally sporadic varying from 22mbps to just sitting there at dialup speed for a considerable time. I can't figure for the life of me how or why the connection is so inconsistent. I don't see this using other applications. I don't know if the internet provider (Cox cable) or both of the Usenet providers are acting up, or if newsserver I/O is causing me problems. Nevertheless i was ready to give up but this will get me through it, thanks a lot!

In the options make sure "BackGround Update" is checked. If not, you'll be constrained by the speed of your hard disk. In background update mode. Newsbin will download headers as quickly as possible and defer the import of the records into the DB until later.
