I'd suggest that the problem is that your disk drive is tapped out and the combination of downloading to and displaying video from the disk is simply too much so, the video data to the video player stops. Are you watching video from the same disk you're downloading too?

There's nothing about installing v6 that somehow taints your system - if you've gone back to v5 and it's doing it there too, then it's all v5 at that point, so there's something else that's changed on your system if you've never seen this before. I know that's not terribly helpful, but it's fairly safe to focus elsewhere for your problem. Try to think of anything else you've changed, although I must admit, a dual core system, nowadays, I can see having difficulty with things like par repair while simultaneously watching a movie.

What virus scanner do you use? I wonder if a recent update has changed things. It does suggest something outside of Newsbin has changed.

If you want Newsbin to make minimal use of the disk drive, make a backup of the NBI file, then edit the original with ""WordPad" and add

[SETTINGS]
MemCacheLimit=0

To the file. This only applies to 6. It basically makes 6 download like 5.59. I'm wondering if this is Autopar processing. You could try disabling autopar and see if it makes a difference.

This error seems to indicate that the network connection temporarily dropped out.

However why it should make the whole system freeze is not at all clear.

I'd say your virus scanner of firewall is blocking the connections to the news server. This is a common problem. You need to tell them not to mess with the data Newsbin transfers from the servers.
