Internet Search and save searches

Postby rbswft » Thu Sep 22, 2011 8:07 am

I know it stores the last 20 or so on the search tab (only text and not filters), but had a thought that a good feature would be to save the searches permanently.

Sometimes if you are looking for weekly updates on certain things, with various filters, then a drop down list that can be permanently saved might be very useful.

I know certain nzb sites offer this, and think this might be a useful selling point for the search feature which I have started using more and more.

Many Thanks

I agree with you 100%. With 6.1 out the door this is really one of the top 3 things I want to add.

How would you like it to work? Dropdown? I was thinking about adding a "Stored Searches" section to the groups list so, you can create multiple stored searches with different filters and maybe spec specific groups and then Newsbin can perhaps poll the search server periodically looking for matches to download.

So, basically, I'm looking for feedback on how you all want it to work. I'll come up with a design, implement it and see if I can get it into 6.11.

Actually thought that dropdown could get too large and not allow full details of the filters to be seen.

I like the idea of having a list like on the Group List. Could have a section called searches. So instead of opening up groups, you would open up the search in a new window.

This would then allow unlimited saves. Think this might be a hell of a lot more coding for you guys than a simple drop down box on the search window. But might prove more flexible in the long run.

Thanks for looking into doing this.

(apologise for repeating what you said, just agreeing with it all)

Absolutely love this idea. I specifically trolled the forum looking for this information and seeing that you're looking to incorporate it is excellent news. I do weekly searches for seasonal shows and always have to renew the searches. I agree that a drop down box might get a little long if you do have a select list that you always search for. Depending on how much work each option would be, I can think of a few different styles. The drop down box, a way to *lock* a search so that it isn't removed from the selections, a seperate "groups" folder or possibly a seperate "search" window specifically for saved searches. I'm sure there are others but those are the ones that stick out most to me.

Thanks Quade!

The ebay app for the IPhone has a 2 tier search system:

Adhoc ones that tend to stick around for a while
Favourite ones, that run periodically and report back the results, either new results or the full hit list.

It would be good to mimic that imho. Ideally for the ad-hoc the present config would record all the previous searches and auto-complete any text as it is input (we can but ask!)

Thanks

Is this something that you are still working on? I would very much like to be able to save searches into a group.

Any updates on this?

Think this will be be requested by many users as the indexing websites continue to shutdown.

Many Thanks

It is on our radar, hopefully in 6.50. We need to get 6.41 out first.

Awesome as a now I am using the search feature exclusively
due to various public indexes shutting down. Not that I wasn't using it heavily already have you seen any increase in traffic in the last few hours. Hopefully you will be able to handle the influx of people who are now interested in the optional search feature. Once again, keep up the good work

Yes, we've seen an increase in search traffic. We have a beast of a server and it seems to be handling it fine. I am working on getting more hot backups on standby to be able to handle increased load if this keeps up.
