sorry to be a complete pain but i cant find where i can set first time records

Yeah, unfortunately it seemed to have undergone a name change over the years, making it a little confusing if you're an old timer or reading out of date docs. It's in Config/Setup and it's now called Download Age. If you happened to get 'FTR' from the docs somewhere, could you point out from where? It should probably be updated...

That setting has been replaced by the "Download Age" setting on Options->Setup. The setting is now in days which is more meaningful to most users. How newsbin converts that to records under the covers I have no idea, but I guess such details do not really matter.

if i wanted to set it to grab only the latest 6000 how would i do this?
i got ftr from the old client i was using

You cannot easily get a specific number. Why not simply set the Download Age to 1 day?
If that would be too many - it might be possible to set the Download Age to 0 and then use the Download Special option to download 50000 older headers. I have not tried that so do not know if 0 is a valid value for the Download Age.
