Easynews Header Problems

Postby mimauk » Thu Oct 10, 2013 8:24 am

After all the incomplete headers from the last couple of weeks, Easynews support forum posted this -

******************************************************

NNTP Headers Status Jason <support@easynews.com> Oct 8, 2013 04:33:01 pm
Hi Folks,

Sincere apologies for the issues we've been having with the article header feed
over the past week or so. We've identified the root cause of the problem,
and we've been working on resolving it. We expect all new content to be
complete and whole (as of the last few days). Some of the posts from 3 days
ago and prior are still incomplete as we investigate methods of backfilling the
lost numbers.

All that said, and all of that aside, we're happy to now be able to offer an
improved NNTP headers experience.

One of the things we've been working on over the last several months has
been working through all of the NNTP retention we support, combing through
all that data, and reindexing it into our new NNTP header platform. The net
result of these efforts is that:

1) We're now able to provide the full 1800 days of NNTP retention via
xover/header data. Previously, the full 1800 days was only available by MID
lookup (aka NZBs). We had to scale back header retention, particularly on
large groups, because of platform limitations.

2) The new header architecture is new, shiny, fast, geo redundant, and built
for the future.

The issues we've been having with the legacy header platform has accelerated
our plans for releasing the new header platform. The new headers and
numbers are now available on some alternate hostnames we've just finished
setting up today. Details here:

news-beta.easynews.com ( geo-routed )
secure-news-beta.easynews.com ( geo-routed, SSL )

us-news-beta.easynews.com ( US )
us-secure-news-beta.easynews.com ( US, SSL)

eu-news-beta.easynews.com ( Europe )
eu-secure-news-beta.easynews.com ( Europe, SSL)

All of these ports are supported:

21
22
23
25
53
80
110
119
443
563
8000
8080

The only difference between our current NNTP hosts and these new 'beta'
hosts is that they point to the our new header platform for all NNTP header
operations (i.e. XOVER). You'll also find everything to be complete and
current here.

Before pointing your newsreader to these new hostnames, please realize that
these new servers have totally different numbers for NNTP articles. The data
your reader has cached now will become invalid. You'll probably want to clear
all of the data for your saved newsgroups and start over fresh.

Holler with questions!

======================
Thanks!

I tried the secure servers but couldn't get any headers [ that might have been because I didn't restart NB after changing the secure server address] but the normal server is re-downloading headers at the moment after I deleted all stored posts.

All groups headers re-downloaded and hardly an incomplete anywhere.

Thanks for that info. It didn't work this morning but is working now. Where did you see this, I still haven't found it on any Easynews messages?

They haven't posted it as an announcement or message - you have to log in, go to the help page and then click on the link to the support forum.

Very easy to find - not!!!

I actually read it first in a post to one of the newsgroups before going to the Easynews site and looking for it to verify it.

You will likely get "Bogus MaxSpool" errors within Newsbin once they get this up and running. The procedure for telling Newsbin to start over when a news server changes their article numbers, without having to re-download all headers, is here.
