Installation requires "Administrator" account?

Postby drofnala » Tue Sep 27, 2011 10:20 am

Just tried to upgrade to v.6.10 64-bit on a Windows 7 64-bit machine. (I'm currently using NewsBin Pro v5.59.) Upon installing, I'm presented with a dialog box offering to install as "current user" or by use of the "Administrator" account. If I choose "current user" (which is the only user account on this system and is an Administrator-level account) I'm told I don't have administrator privileges and must use the Administrator account.

Must I create an Administrator account merely to upgrade to v.6.10? (I do not wish to do this - I'm the only user of this machine and want to keep it as clean as possible.) How have others gotten around this requirement?

I haven't heard of this happening before. Are you sure your account has administrator rights? Win7 requires this so the installer can write the application into the Program Files folder, among other things. Do you get a UAC (User Access Control) prompt when you run the installer? I've noticed that it may pop up in the background and you have to click on the windows task bar to see it.

My account definitely has Administrator rights - I've never had an issue installing any application (64- or 32-bit) prior to this under this account. I know the UAC prompt and the installer never gets to that step.

I may try to create another administrator account named "Administrator" which is what is pre-filled in the "Run As" dialog box the NewsBin installer brings up. That's about the only solution I can figure out at this point.

Thanks for your response.

Update: I tried to create the "Administrator" account and was informed by Win7 that it already existed even though I could not access or see it on my system. However, I created a second "Admin" account and as soon as I did that, the installer worked fine. I created from my own original primary user account, which is an administrator account. The "Run As" dialog box never came up - it ran automatically as soon as I fired up the executable installation routine I downloaded from the NewsBin Pro site. Go figure...

Hello,

I have the exact same issue, except I am not able to solve this by creating a new "Admin" account with administrator privileges.

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate and have for the better part of a year been trying to install a new version of Newsbin. The older version has worked well until recently when it stopped loading headers.

My only administrator account (and also only account) is named Benasaur with [password]. I do not have an account named "Administrator," though windows reports that one exists in that name, but it is not visible and I cannot access it. I also created an account "Admin" to troubleshoot per the above but have not been successful.

Upon running the installer, I get the prompt that asks to install from this account or to install from another account. I then get a variety of errors all relating to privileges, such as:

Install as: Admin/no pwd
"The Newsbin Installer requires Administrator privileges to run. Please try again"

Install as Administrator/no pwd
"Logon failure: user account restriction. Possible reasons are blank passwords not allowed, logon hour restrictions, or a policy restriction has been enforced."

Install as Benasaur/pwd
"Unable to gain Administrator rights. Error: 5"

I have never had any issues installing other programs. Any support in this regard would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Ben

What version are you installing?

Does your main login have a password on it?

The UAC stuff should just pop up a dialog asking if it's ok to run as administrator. It's working fine for 1000's of people so I suspect something is setup differently on your windows machine or you are running some Internet Security software that is conflicting.

Yes, my main (and only) login has a password on it. I have tried installing 6.42 and also the 6.50 beta 16. Both return the exact same errors.

I just tried installing with antivirus disabled, but the errors remain.

I tried removing the password to my user account, but that didn't work either.

Okay, I'm happy to report that I was able to install 6.42 after right clicking on the installer and selecting "run as administrator." I don't know why I didn't think of this earlier, but the new version works fine. Thanks.

That should be happening automatically. There must be something about your windows installation that is preventing that from happening. I'm glad you figured out a workaround though.
