Old/Idle vs Downloaded?

Postby ppan » Fri Dec 28, 2012 3:02 am

Sorry for a trivial question;
When is a file marked as Old/Idle?
Would a downloaded file ever change the status to show as Old/Idle?

Old means it's old but, undownloaded.

New means it's neither downloaded nor marked old.

Downloaded means both old and downloaded. Downloaded can never be new.

No on the downloaded becoming old. Not unless something goes wrong with the DB that tracks the "downloaded" state.

Thanks. However, I am still not 100% clear on how a file is marked old.
For example, if I display posts from 2010 they show as new, although many would say that they are "old".

Maybe I need to have added them to the download queue first to mark them "Old"? If they were not downloaded (e.g. duplicates or they were later removed) then they would be marked as "Old"; if they were downloaded then they would be marked as "Downloaded"?

You can select them and click delete to make them old. Or you can set newsbin to make them old after you view them. Look in the right click menu.

Still cant get this to work correctly. I have many files that are marked as downloaded in the post list. I try to hide them by selecting "Hide Old" but that doesn't work...
Do I have to manually mark all downloaded files as "old" (right-click menu) to be able to hide them?

Isn't there some way to automatically mark a post as old after it has been downloaded?

You need to reload the group I believe. Just tested it here, it worked for me(auto mark old off - hide old on - load group - download file - reload group - it's not displayed). So insta-hide? Probably not. You able to repro that?

I closed and reopend Newsbin, thinking that the files were going to be reloaded. However, many downloaded (but not all!) files are still not marked old (just downloaded). Thus, hide old does not work.

Note that I use a display age to only show files from May 2010.

I followed your suggestion to by clicking on "Reload from Disk". This brought up a date range. Since I already use a display age filter, I selected "Load all Posts". After chugging along for a few minutes the files were loaded again. I used the display age filter again, and the downloaded files still shows up.

Reloaded again and only selected a date range from May 2010. However, same issue :?

Sorry, I didn't use the reload button, I just right clicked on the group and hit Show Posts again. Not sure if that makes a difference.

I have seen scenarios where old downloaded posts show up again, but they're the exception and they go away. It may be related to overlap or crossposting, unsure. Also, some very old posts in erratic groups do it(reposted?).

To repro, I would keep it simple and download latest spool, download a couple of small files, then reload. I see them disappear.
