500 days of headers max

Postby tacomaguy20 » Fri Dec 28, 2012 6:37 pm

Hello everyone, I'm having an issue... no matter what settings I use on newsbin pro, I can't get anymore than 500 days of headers. I was using version 6.21 and was having that issue. I just recently installed the newest version and no luck. If I import the 5xx, I see the old headers I downloaded before but if I download all headers again afterwards it puts me back to 500. Could it be server limitations? I use usenetserver and their retention is 1500 days. Could they have a header limit or something?

Usenetserver caps the groups to 120 million headers each. That means for some groups, you'll only get 2 months or less of headers. File retention is much longer than header retentions.

If you want all 1500 days worth of headers, you'll need to use AW or Giga or one of their resellers.

You could sign up for the giga 3 day trial, download the hell out of the headers, then use those headers on Usenetserver.

Check your "Storage Age" too. You probably want it set to at least 1500.

I'm not sure if that is my problem because when I go to download all headers it says download size and in one group it says 194646. After it downloads the headers it says 94629 new records in that group. It maxes out at displaying 500 days and I have the settings at 2000 days for download, display, and storage age. No filters. Any ideas?

You can PM me the group and I can check on Astra and Giga. It's not unusual for header count to be more than new records. In many cases it takes multiple headers to make a single new record. In some cases, it can be as many as 200 posts per file.

That group is pretty tiny (as groups go).

That said, using Giga and Astra, I get 1500 days or so of posts.

Giga and Astra both reported 1.29 million headers for 1500 days of this group.

You said your server only has 194,646 headers. That makes it pretty clear that the problem is the server is only offering a subset of the headers AW and Giga does.

Did some digging and found this

One important note about the Highwinds servers (usenetserver) is that they have article retention of 1315+ days, but the header index for most groups is roughly 500 days. That means that if you use a newsreader that downloads headers and you select which articles to retrieve, only the last 500 days worth will be visible, even though there are 500+ more days on the server.

If you use a 3rd party header index system like the one built into Newsbin Pro, or a NZB indexing website like binsearch.info, the header retention is not important, as the external 3rd party header index pointers are universal and can access all 1315+ days of articles on the Highwinds servers.

So if 500-ish days of headers is enough for you, or you use a 3rd party header index or NZB search site, you might find one of the Highwinds providers to your liking.

Thanks for all the help. Guess I need to find another way to get older headers downloaded or find another server.

Giganews is super. And you can easily switch between payment plans. Get full access to everything one month and reduce to a trickle the next. Had it for years!
