Ram Speed?

Postby Cocha » Fri Nov 09, 2012 5:31 am

Is ram speed that important for newsbin?

Reason i ask is that a friend is building 24/7 download box out of his old sandybridge spares and i have some spare DDR3 1066MHZ i can give him for free or would he be better off buying some 1333/1600MHz ram.

Thanks

I would argue it's not a critical part of the pipeline in the big picture. Of course, any faster component in a system will give you improvements, but if you check a typical newsbin session memory use isn't really all that huge. Of course there's reading and writing that happens constantly, but I don't think it holds a candle to disk IO. That to me is the most stressed part of a newsbin session, apart from the network.

My thought too. Faster disk drives are more bang for the buck.
