Auto UnRAR slow and brings system to its knees.

Postby bman » Sat Jun 02, 2012 1:04 pm

Recently downloaded several 2-4GB file sets full of a few thousand small files each, and noticed two things:

1) The UnRAR process took a LONG time. I mean it took hours to unrar these files, where using an external tool to do the unrar only took a minute or so.
2) While the UnRAR was in progress the system was pretty much non-responsive. CPU was running between 50-80% of total, and any UI interaction had huge delays. If I paused the unrar (after several minutes for it to respond to clicking the pause button), everything went back to normal. Unpause and everything went back to unresponsive (and un-rar started from 0% again).

I've never noticed this on similar sized RARs that contained only a few large files.

6.40B2 lets you stall download while the unrar is happening. It's in the new performance options.

- I did a back to back 6 GB unrar the other day, Newsbin and WinRAR and they were within 5 seconds of each other over the course of a 3.5 minute unrar.

- You can't pause the unrar. The pause button will pause the download though.

What kind of machine is this? I had similar results (not quite as bad) with an old AMD64 system with 1 GB of RAM. An Atom Netbook, which I expected to perform even worse just crushed the AMD in every way.

I wonder if you're just out of RAM? That will kill any performance.

I only have seen the issue with RAR's that contain thousands of files, just being large doesn't make it happen.

Machine is a VM running Windows 7 64 bit with 4GB of ram and given 4 cores of the i7 950. Pretty sure RAM was still available, if I remember correctly it was sitting at about 70% used.
System the VM runs in is an OSX box with 24GB of ram.

Edit - sent a PM letting you know which files I was seeing the issue with in case you want to test one out.

VM's are known to have pretty awful disk IO performance. I consider 70% ram usage to be pretty high. In task manager, how much RAM is Newsbin using? The fact you're using a VM for this sort of makes it hard to compare apples to apples. Everything is virtualized including the video drivers and IO. Either one could cause issues.

I saw your PM. I'll check it out.
