Frustrated - new to v6 and hate this "retry" 'feature'

Postby urbanriot » Sun May 06, 2012 10:16 pm

I made the mistake of upgrading from v5 to v6 and while I'm sure it offers a lot of improvements over v6, it's not for me; but I'm trying to cope and see if there's anything that's improved for me... in the meantime, can someone tell me how to make the program autopar every file? I don't know what this new v6 'feature' is but half my downloads are sticking with 'Retry: 25 Next Retry: 259 0%: completed' The first two numbers change but the file always says 0% completed.

It says 0% completed on so many binaries, but the expanded list shows everything downloaded? I don't understand the issue but it's frustrating!

I threw grabit on my system to get a few of the downloads I need but I'd like to keep trying to evaluate this new v6 so any help would be appreciated.

I'd also like to add that if I go to the folder with the data, the RAR set is totally healthy.

Quickpar says it's hungup on a missing .NFO file, but the RAR set is all green, I didn't need to Quickpar.

Make sure you're running 6.31.

Quickpar says it's hungup on a missing .NFO file, but the RAR set is all green, I didn't need to Quickpar.

Is why it's not finishing.

Are the par files listed there along with the files? It should download a par file, enough to repair and then repair the NFO into existence. You do have autopar turned on an "Automatically Unrar" set? On any of the items you have this issue with, right click and select properties. Then check the PAR state of the download. That'll probably tell you why it's not finishing. Missing file or not enough par blocks or something like that.

It's retrying sure but, that's not the real issue. The real issue is that the PAR set isn't complete in that all the blocks aren't there and/or there aren't enough PAR blocks available to repair.

- In the autopar options, check box above "Aggressive mode" says "Disable....." or something like that. Try checking that and trying some new downloads.

Version: Newsbin Pro 6.31 - Build: 1877

Functions enabled:
- Automatically unRAR Complete Files

Functions previously disabled, now enabled:
- Aggressive Assembly mode

I had a pile of pars, more pars than I needed for one little .NFO file. Just to be sure, I ran quickpar and it created the missing .NFO file.

I'll give this a go and report back if it's still a problem. I'm with Giganews and since there's rarely a missing post, I've never had a problem like this with v5 so I was a bit frustrated. Thanks for the quick response! Still trying to get a handle on this version... !

- Aggressive Assembly mode

I'd leave this unchecked. I'd check the one above it. Then try some downloads.

and since there's rarely a missing post,

This isn't really true any more. I don't think you problem is incompletes though. Giganews is pretty aggressive about complying with DMCA requests which means some parts of some files are purposely removed. They're required to do this by US law.

The issue in this instance is that you're not downloading NFO files and such so, the files aren't finishing. If you disable the PAR unpausing. I expect most of these problems will go away.

Ooops, sorry, really tired and singled out the "Aggressive" part of what you wrote while missing the rest. I've made your suggested adjustment and trying more downloads...!

So for the fact he can download the retrying files with grabbit but can't with V6 i don't understand the logic and reason that the problem lays with the servers or DMCA removed files?

You didn't read what I wrote then.

He made a statement:

and I'm trying to make clear this isn't true.

Is has nothing to do with the basic issue. Giganews has a ton of DMCA removed files. Some are completely removed, some are partially removed. The older the files are, the more likely they are to be pulled.

Downloads and repairs work perfectly for me. They're not working perfectly for him. That's why there are options to tweak in Newsbin to tune this. I don't want to download all the PAR files and don't have to. Other people with less reliable servers than mine might have to pull more pars. That's what the option I suggested to him will do. Pull more pars.

If you've got a problem, post what it is. So far, this is trying to figure out why the original poster is having a problem, which based on what I'm reading is we're waiting to hear back.

Grabbit downloads all the pars. That's basically what checking the "Disable par unpausing" check box does in Newsbin too. If things are working properly and your servers are up to snuff in Newsbin, you don't have to download any pars most of the time. Even with this checkbox set, Newsbin won't download them all. It'll download enough pars for repair and then stop downloading them while the repair and unrar process takes place. What this checkbox does it remove any decision making about when and what pars to download. It becomes more mechanical. I'm sure more reliable for some people.

As for addressing it, 6.4 does away with the retry indicator altogether. What you get instead is an indicator of par blocks so, you can see why it's not finishing.

The problem I'm seeing with 6.32 at the moment is that the PARs get put at the top of the download list immediately, and they get all downloaded, even before the rest of the parts and files are downloaded. Any way to prevent that? I've tried "Agressive assembly" and "disable par unpausing", and it doesn't seem to make a difference.

It used to be that unnecessary pars were just ignored and only downloaded when the par checking failed and needed more blocks.

Do you have autopar disabled? If so, you might want to send the pars to the wish list. It'll download the one small par and the rest will wait in the wish list in case you need them.

and "disable par unpausing"

If autopar is on and If you want the pars to remain paused you need to uncheck this.

Ideally, AutoPar would be enabled, AND the PARs would automatically go to the Wish List and downloaded on an as-needed basis. But it currently seems like those two options are mutually exclusive.

In default behaviour with AutoPar enabled the PARS go to the download list in a paused state. They are only unpaused and downloaded if required. No need to clutter the Wish List with them to get the desired behaviour.

You didn't give me much to work with so, I guessed. Your symptoms sounded like autopar was disabled. With autopar disabled, pars are all downloaded unless you send them to the wish list.

If you leave "disable par unpausing" unchecked, the pars will be paused. That's for new items you add to the download list. Things already in the download list already have their states set.

So, uncheck "Disable par unpausing", uncheck "Aggressive" mode and any new things you add to the download list should have paused pars.

For some reason, that very same configuration was originally causing all PARS to be downloaded first thing. Now, reverting back to your suggested settings, it's working correctly once again.

Edit: Actually, it seems to be doing it intermittently. It appears as though a set of PARs and associated MP3s do not necessarily have the same base filename and can therefore not be identified by Newsbin as being together. This causes all the PARs to be downloaded.

This wouldn't happen with a RAR because the PARs and the RARs in that case would very often have the same basic filename.
