Error messages reported in NewsbinV6.31

Postby dowsha » Sat Apr 28, 2012 2:01 pm

Hi dudes,

I got some error messages when I'm downloading from Giganews and SSL.
My download works correctly but newsbin Pro v6.31 reports somes issues as critical. :(

[18:37:00] ERROR - SSL Read Failed: 10060 A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.

[18:37:00] ERROR NNTPSocket - Server:news.giganews.com NNTPServer: Timeout - Waiting for Server to send Data: Socket - Read or Write Timeout

I contacted my provider (Giganews) and got a quick feedback :

I'm sorry for the inconvenience. I have reviewed our server logs and see
the following error for your account:

"exceeded max number of connections"

It appears that your newsreader is attempting to open a new connection
before it has completely finished closing a previous connection. This is
causing you to exceed the connection limit. Usually after 15-30 minutes
the stalled connections should terminate, so that new connections can be
started.

This is most frequently a problem with some newsreaders. If all of your
allowed connections are being used, and you change newsgroups or try to
download headers, the new connection will be denied causing the error you
are experiencing. If this is the problem, simply lowering the number of
connections in your newsreader will solve it.

This can also be interference from anti-virus or firewall software, even if
you haven't made any changes. These types of software can cause a closing
connection to hang open as the new one is trying to open, resulting in a
conflict.

This error can also happen if your computer was recently disconnected and
reconnected to the Internet or if your ISP has recently assigned your
computer a new IP address. Sometimes the connections opened with your
previous IP address remain stale and just need to time-out.

Please close your newsreader, wait 20 minutes, then try reconnecting with a
lower number of connections. If this problem persists, please try
connecting with all of your firewall, anti-virus, spyware, and other
security software temporarily disabled. In some cases, you may also need
to reboot your computer and router. If either of these are holding onto
your connection, a simple reboot will fix most other issues.

I followed their advices, then I tried to disable my AV/FW programs, no effects, same issues reported :(
newsbin pro is allowed in my FW program (ESET smart security)

My downloads work, but why got this error messages ? Someone can explain ?

You should check the number of connections you have set in Newsbin against the maximum your Account allows. Newsbin should always be set to a lower value so that is some headroom to allow time for closed connections to be recycled by the server for re-use.. In fact to optimise performance you should set Newsbin to the smallest number of connections that can max your connection speed.

Normally my account allow 50 threads. Even if I set 10 or 25 connections, same issues reported..
How can I know the max connections for my connection speed ?

I've just sent an update ticket to the giganews support with a screenshot of my server config under newsbin... I'm waiting their feedback...

I confirm 50 connections for my account diamond.

No more errors since 15 minutes... :?: :!:

hereby the feedback from giganews :

Are you using the VPN in conjunction with your newsreader? Are you making
sure to always connect to the VPN prior to connecting to the newsreader?

I show that you are currently connected are you still getting those errors?

Have you tried rebooting your router/modem then reconnecting to the
newsreader?

I'm not using my VyprVPN with newsbin actually...

I keep you in touch, if errors come back...

Thanks for your help.

I'd run no more than 20 connections. I get full speed with 10 which is 100 Mbps. More connections doesn't mean more speed. It's more speed up to a point and then it's not faster and can even be slower because your PC is working harder.

Some number of connections failures isn't really that unusual. If the downloads continue to function, I just wouldn't worry about it. I suspect with fewer connections, you'll have fewer errors and no reduction in download speed. Usenet isn't like torrent. You don't need a bunch of connections to get full download speed.
