Installation problem

Postby kdhenry » Fri Sep 30, 2011 5:02 pm

I installed v 6.10 and when asked I told it to use the current information from v5.57.
Now that it's installed I nave nothing from the v5.57 installation available.
and
each time I open Newsbin I have to reenter the server information and all the newsgroups.
Newsbin is not saving anything.

Thank you for the help

What OS? Sounds like a permissions problem and Newsbin can't write to the data folder. We had reports from other people like this and it was solved by them running the installer as administrator. I haven't been able to recreate the problem myself.

Weird. When you open Newsbin, go under Options and click the Open Data Folder and see what happens.

Did you originally install Newsbin on XP then upgrade to Win7? We've heard cases where Win7 makes the original newsbin data folder readonly. If this is the case use then use this procedure to move the Newsbin Data Folder to a folder you have full read/write access to.

I closed Newsbin then reopened it.
For a brief moment it showed 7 items in the groups tab and then reset it to 0.
It reset everything in Options and it eliminated the server.
When I open the data folder SPOOL_V1 is there as well as SPOOL_V6.
There are some additional files three too with today's date.
SPOOL_V6 has 7 newsgroup folders which, near as I can remember, were the groups last used and I suspect match the 7 groups in the tap when Newsbin is opened.

This HD has never run XP.
Win7 was a clean install. (((A VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED PROCEDURE!!!)))

Huh!!
The Failed Downloads tab and Files List tabs appear to be accurate.

Start Newsbin, do a "File Save As" (then cancel). This will show you where the NBI file is located. This is the file that contains your groups. If Newsbin can't write to it, that's why it can't save your groups and servers. Looks to me like this file is read-only or in a read-only folder.

Thanks, it's working now.
I opened the Properties of the NBI file when I was in Save As.
The file was not read-only or in a restricted folder.
I then set permission for Everyone and Users to have full control in the security tab.
This did the trick.
Thanks for the help.

Incidentally, it seems that the number of thumbnails must be reset from the default of 3 and then returned to 3 to maintain this setting.

Not sure what you mean. Whenever you change the number of thumbnails, you have to either close and reopen the thumbnails tab to get it to reflect the change. Maybe that's what you are seeing.

Thumbnails was closed during my experimenting so that well could be the solution.
It's odd that it doesn't work without resetting the default.
