I'm trying out Newsdemon, but the header download speeds using SSL are very slow compared to Astraweb. I get 50mbps compressed using Astraweb, and between .5 to 2 mbps using Newsdemon. I've tried different ports. File downloads seem to use my full bandwidth of 18mbps.

At NewsDemon, we do not currently offer compressed headers which is probably causing the most of your issue.

To my knowledge, only one connection is used to download headers in the client. Someone at Newsbin can probably answer this better than me, but I think the connections are limited to one at a time so the client can better keep the headers organized in a linear fashion so article numbers/message ID's don't get transposed.

A news client asks the server for the article range and gets something like 1000 1120 1220 (total articles, low watermark, high watermark). Low watermark is the lowest article number in the group (oldest article) and high watermark is the newest.

Opti, the best way to get the max header speed is to hit the update button and update all the groups at once. I have mine set to update every hour so, I seldom have to manually update the groups.

Newsdemon- would it be possible to enable header compression and fix your header download problem? For me it would mean two orders of magnitude less waiting time. Today's header speeds are worse than yesterday's, between .5 - 1 mbps. For me, I would have to stay with Astraweb which gives me around 100mbps as they have much higher header download speeds coupled with compression.
