Speeds have been really slow for me lately, regardless of port. I do have over 500 gbs transferred in under a month, however, DL speeds are even worse than I had Newshosting now. With newshosting, speeds would be throttled on the default port quickly and regularly, however, I never had that issue with Powerusenet. Up until lately that is. So I am almost certain my ISP isn't throttling specific ports. With PowerUsenet all the ports are pretty much the same speed regardless (all pretty much obviously throttled)

Overall service is decent, I guess, but way too slow for me. I also do not like not being able to upload at all. I think I will cancel this month, and try a different service. I had issues with Giganews tech support, before I had ever became a paying customer, so I won't touch them unless I absolutely have too.

Yeah, I just switched to a different provider and it was powerusenet throttling speeds. With the same port (any port actually) with a different provider I get full throughput. Using powerusenet and the same port I get maybe 1/3 that speed.

Just thought you would like to know.

well if you had done over 500Gig then im not suprised you got throttled

I'm not convinced that PU throttled him though. I'd be more inclined to think the ISP did something to network priority to PU.

I've been using Powerusenet for a few months now and I've had nothing but outstanding service from them. I'm nowhere near 500GB/month like the original poster though. Maybe 200GB tops per month.

The only difference in speeds I have noticed is that header download is about half the speed (300K/sec) as when I download files (700K/sec). I figure that's cuz Newsbin is only using a single connection to download header info versus 4 connections to download files. (Quade, does that sound correct?).

I've had to change ports a few times, but I think the issue has been with my cable provider being heavily used at the moment. Speeds go back to full after a while. I've never seen a sudden speed increase just by changing ports.

no, it was Powerusenet who throttled the speeds. It's only obvious since switching to a different provider (a mere few seconds later) that speeds are at full throughput on the same port. I even switched back to Powerusenet as a test and the speeds were 1/3rd what they should be.

As for having 500gb a month; I'm paying for Unlimited service. Nowhere does it state that service is limited to a set criteria when paying for "Unlimited Service"

For throttling, they have lost my business and have gained some free negative advertising.

Also I don't think 500GB is really anything extreme in this day and age. Think about updating headers for groups each day. 16gb .TS files lossless flac etc.

hmmm, just because you switched providers and regained your full download bandwidth, don't automatically presume that it was powerusenet who was throttling you.

For starters if your provider was limiting your speeds to powerusent (500 gigs just on usegroups alone), your ISP would have very easily been able to see where all of that bandwidth was coming from and slow down the speed for all traffic to powerusent. (doesn't have to be done via port #) Why would they limit your new provider until after you abuse your access?

Change your supply, get your fast speeds back, and continue abusing your ISPs policy on bandwidth (just for shits and giggles how much does your ISP say is your monthly bandwidth allocation on your plan) and wait and see what happens.

The only way to really be able to tell who it was who was doing the throttling would have been to walk over to a friends house (or drive) and connect to PUN there. If you get the high speeds then it was your ISP, if it is still slow, then, and only then can you say, "It's only obvious"

Umm did you even bother reading the user agreement that you agreed to?
I know I remember something about an "acceptable use policy" that wasn't necessarily defined.

sorry about your luck as I can max out my 10mps with only using 2 of my 4 connections.

Don't see how that equates to PUN (powerusenet)

I'm friendly with my ISP and have had discussions with them on numerous occasions (in person) and they have told me they don't throttle speeds.

I've also been told the same by usenet providers however time and time again changing to a different providers has restored full download speeds for me.

Say what you will, but I am certain that powerusenet was throttling my speeds. I also know what damage statements can cause for companies (I work in marketing)

I'm just an honest guy stating that PowerUsenet throttled my speeds and switching to a different provider I now have full speed again. My ISP has told me more than once that have no interest in throttling speeds.

Could have been a routing issue

Noticed the same problem today, switched accross to my fill server, Astraweb and "Band" straight up to 5.7Mbps from 135k
