Running newsbin it will stay open for hours, but a few seconds after I download a file it will crash.

This happens on two computers (Both running Ubuntu 8.04) I have tried running a both 0.96 and the latest build (1.0rc5) of Wine, but nothing seems to help.

When i check the download directory the file is actually in there, so its not a permissions problem.

I have also tried running as root but it doesnt fix the problem.

Anyone else experiencing this? Anyone got any ideas? I have pasted the log here:

I'm not running the newer wine v1, but try hiding the Download tab(behind another tab) and see if that helps. Might be the downloading progress bars.

do you have your graphics driver enabled in ubuntu?

Yeah I do

The main computer is a media center with XBMC.

I messed with the windows settings "Allow the window manager to control the windows" and it actually managed to download a file and not crash.

But now everytime I try to load it it crashes, changing that option stops it from crashing but then next time its opened it will crash again.

Edit: BTW I am now using Wine 1.0

You don't mention whether hiding the progress tab helped...if it's graphics related that should work.

Wherever you have your download tab, there is likely other tabs there too - I just meant to click on one of those and they would come to the front, hiding the download tab. Keep it that way and download a few files to see if it's related to drawing the download tab progress markers.

It's just an idea to help narrow down the thing that's causing the problem.

do you have compiz running by chance?

have you had this problem ever since you installed newsbin? has newsbin ever run right?

Compiz is disabled because it plays havoc with XBMC, and yeah had this problem on both brand new installs (on other pcs) and this one every time.

Ive partially found success....it doesnt crash on any tab apart from "Files" tab, but its really really annoying to not be able to see which files have downloaded.

Any ideas?

Yeah, it's the graphics call being done by wine drawing those little download chicklets. Unfortunately the problem is on the wine end - it obviously runs fine in Windows, so perhaps you could submit your detailed report as you posted initially over at winehq? I know this is new behaviour since older releases work fine.

In the meantime as a workaround you can keep that hidden, or perhaps narrowing the width of the download bars enough will keep it from even trying to draw it will stop the crashes.

The Files list does not have any graphicsc - it is the Download list that has the progress bars.

I was assuming that was a typo.

I'm not sure - there was a reference to not being able to see the files that have downloaded which is consistent with the files tab.

Yeah definitely the files tab added 2500 files to Newsbin last night and spent the whole night downloading without a single crash.

i should add that newsbin has crashed on me a couple times when i opened the files tab. not to often, but it's about the only time it does crash.

It's odd because the files tab is one of the simplist tabs. I'd much more expect the download tab to cause problems.

There must be certain calls that are made when the Files tab is selected that are specific to WIN32 (Like explorer based stuff).

Yeah, there's not explorer like calls in Newsbin (other than the MOTD). I'm more inclined to think it's related to "Custom Draw" but, all the lists do custom draw.

i wouldn't bother with using a older version. i am using the latest version of both wine and newsbin with no problems.

On a parallel problem course to the above (downloading files crashing Newsbin) I just posted this over at the Virtualbox forum.

I upgraded Vbox yesterday morning from 1.6.4 to 2.0.0 on an Ubuntu Studio 8.04 (Hardy) AMD64 machine with 4gb PC6400 RAM and an Athlon 5200+ dual core CPU. My virtual Windows is XP with up to date service packs. It's been running with hardly any issues for several months other than Explorer sometimes locking up for no good reason.

On a whim, seeing that there's a 2.0.0 out there and I missed the 1.6.6 revision, I went for the upgrade. Since then my virtual windows has crashed into the blue screen of death numerous times while doing usenet downloads using Newsbin (which has been very stable on the 1.6.4 Vbox platform). If I leave it sitting on the desktop doing nothing, nothing bad happens, as I'd hope would be the case.

So I uninstalled the 2.0.0 Vbox, then reinstalled it, did a chkdsk c: /F in case there was any MFT corruption (none), then reloaded the 2.0.0 guest additions. But it keeps blowing up in the same way. Specifically anytime I d/l a file in Newsbin, as soon as it completes, I crash into a blue screen of death. I can harvest headers OK and small text files, but not larger audio/video files. Which I suspect may have something to do with them needing to be assembled.

I tried downgrading back to 1.6.6 but it doesn't want to provide me access to my virtual hard drive. As soon as I reupgrade back to 2.0.0 I get access to the virtual drive again. I've also reinstalled and reconfigured Newsbin but nothing changes, and I've tried running the virtual Windows with VT-x/AMD-V and PAE/NX both Enabled or Disabled. Makes no difference either way.

So it looks like I'm stuck with solving the problem at the 2.0.0 release level instead of just ignoring it until somewhere down the road. FWIW the other program that I need the virtual Windows for is sony Acid Pro 6. It works flawlessly.

Here's the error message I get from the Vbox launcher when I try to run after downgrading to 1.6.6:

Has anyone else experienced this kind of blue screen crash since 2.0.0 was released? If so, what did you do about it? Are you still on 2.0.0, and if so are you living with intermittent failure, or have you just returned to an earlier revision? (i.e. 1.6.6 or 1.6.4)

On the whole I'm impressed with the stability and functionality of the Vbox product. It does what I want when I need to go into Windows. But right now I'm cursing myself and hitting my head with a hammer for not letting sleeping dogs lie/fixing something that wasn't broken!

Any constructive help here would be appreciated.

My Newsbin crash issue has been fixed with vBox 2.0.2 on Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy.

I should also add that testing Newsbin in vBox 2.0.2 on the latest Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Alpha 6 on AMD64 with the latest 2.6.27 rt kernel causes my system to lockup completely brain-dead. Which isn't surprising since it's an out on the bleeding edge test. If you're thinking about jumping from Hardy to Intrepid as I am I suggest waiting for the production release (and even a while longer), or be prepared to run the stable 2.6.19 rt kernel which is OK on both Hardy and Intrepid.

I'm pretty happy with Win64.

hardy is doing just fine for me. i don't see a need to upgrade until it's done.
