While it isn't officially supported, we have many users who successfully run NewsBin under Linux with a Windows emulator (Wine is the most popular). This forum exists for you Linux guys to share your experience getting NewsBin running on Linux as well as report any strangeness that we may or may not be able to fix. DThor is the resident expert.

I'm having a lot of instability with Newsbin (GN) 5.35. Is anyone else using the Giganews Newsbin client with WINE and having success?
I was able to download about 3GB of data, so I'm having some luck. But just in the configuration process I had to save every change I made, because it crashed maybe 6 times. In order to get headers and successfully download anything, I probably went through a dozen crashes in all.
I'm going to reinstall a fresh copy of Ubuntu and try my luck again. Ubuntu7.04>WINE0.9.42>newsbinGN5.35 and hopefully I see the success that others have mentioned.
Any reccomendations?

im also using ubuntu 7.04 with newsbin 5.35. im running very stable. im not using the giganews client though, maybe that's what is giving you problems.
one thing i did change in wine was unchecking the option "let the windows manager to manager created windows"
its under the graphics tab in the wine options. run winecfg from the the terminal.
i was having problems with compiz and newsbin sometimes and this seems to have fixed the problem.

Giganews version is pretty close to identical to the normal version. It's probably a DLL problem.

I didnt do anything with any DLLs, so if I should have, that could definetly be part of the problem.
I'll report back after I get a fresh install in place. I've done a lot of learning on this ubuntu install so its probably not worth trying to troubleshoot on an install thats essentially an unknown quantity.

I had the same kind of problems until I upgraded from the packaged version of Wine in Ubuntu Feisty to the latest Wine 0.9.44
With Wine 0.9.44 Newsbin seems rock solid on my machine

That wasn't the case for my setup. All I did to go from having lots of Newsbin crashes to none was upgrade to the very latest version of wine. No driver changes at all.
