Previewing parts of downloads on linux

Hi all,

On windows its always frustrating when your whole download hasnt finished yet ..
it is in most cases not possible .. to view parts of movies ...
When doing unrar e -kb archivename.rar from the commandline ... the unpacked movie from the part of the archive that you downloaded already is left on the disk and not deleted ... this is also true for 7-zip on wine ... on .. linux .. i dont know .. to be honest ..
Off course when the archive is corrupted only the part of the movie before the corruption is viewable without repair ...

When the archive is unpacked ... at least the part that you downloaded .. you can preview it with most players on linux .. you need to install .. all packages referring to xvid and divx .. gstreamer and so on ... on linux ... and the w32codecs ... are always handy ... also ..
It is even possible to start viewing a movie while unpacking it ... linux is so much more flexible in this special case ...
Anyway ... being able to check out the quality of a movie before dowloading the whole thing can save a lot of frustration .. at least if cam editions are not your thing ...

What most people do not realise is that even on windows it is easy to preview movies. Simply rename one of the .rar files to have a .vob extension and play it with your favourite players. This does not always work - but I get better than 90% success ratio.

I don't know about "rename". If you unrar and say "Save Partial File" this works. Your scheme would work with Master Splitter files though.

You'll find that most if not all "scene" released movies are rar'd without any compression due to release rules, usually allowing you to sample the rar directly if it's a dvd or (s)vcd format disc just by renaming as mentioned.
